Chapter 1: The Beginning and End

Perhaps she should have knocked before barging in. Taking another look at the scene behind the boor, she nodded, Yup definitely should have knocked. Or maybe shouted out loud before knocking and before opening the door. Kami, she was never going to forget this for the rest of her shinobi life.

While Konoha rebuilt itself after the devastation of what would be called the Great Sannin Wars, Naruto had finally been named as the 5th Hokage. Standing atop the mounting overlooking the once again prospering village, the new Hokage could not help but sigh as he remembered what had happened not more than three years ago.

Akatsuki had immediately disbanded when its members heard of Madara and Pein's defeat during the war. In their arrogance, they had sought to claim the jinchuriki by themselves while in the midst of the chaos of Sound's attack against Konaha. Neither ever knowing that a spy within the organization had warned the village and both men had found themselves defeated by the Naruto,Sasuke, Sakura and the rest of the Rookie 9.
Although Konoha had also lost Jiraiya, at least he had been able to protect the village from Sound mercenaries just long enough for Tsunade to deal the killing blow to Orochimaru. When her fight had been over, the slug sannin was beyond consolation when she found her silver haired companion near-death. Exhausting the last of her chakra she managed to keep Jiraiya awake and conscious as she made her confession, and as the toad sannin responded in kind both ninjas died together in each other's arms.

It was later revealed that Itachi had been the spy within Akatsuki, and that his brother Sasuke was a spy within Sound. Both Uchiha brothers had long known about the link between Madara, Akatsuki and Orochimaru and both had decided to play the long drawn roles of deserters in their seek of justice for their families.
While the village had believed that it was Sasuke who found his clan murdered, it was actually the older Uchiha who had seen their deaths as he was placed in a strong paralyzing justu by a disguised Madara. It had been foolish of the man though to laugh at the sight of his clan's blood because Itachi had recognized the voice.
