Sometimes the Worst Survive
Dharma Lewis knew it was late, it was six-thirty after midnight; she hated the night
shift. Her shift was to end half an hour ago, but her co-worker had not yet arrived. She
couldn't leave until she was replaced; but she could leave the door slightly ajar. Her
magazine pages settled randomly on a page from the cool summer breeze. Too lazy to
turn it back, her eyes found the article interesting. In the distance Dharma heard sirens
and she vaguely hoped it wasn't her two beautiful girls and her loving husband.
The sun was peeking over the horizon, an hour after the breeze flipped the pages of the
magazine, and twelve minutes after Dharma's eyes rested. She heard sirens and screams,
she estimated, about nine blocks away.
"Business was slow tonight…" she thought as she closed the doors of the Quick 'N
Save, regardless of the rules. She needed to get home; she took out her cell phone out of
her purse and dialed the number. She heard the annoying beep of busy and hung up. One
thing Dharma did notice was the silence of the once noisy mocking birds. She ignored
what her instincts told her. Fumbling for the keys with one hand and biting her nails with
the other. She opened her car door. She turned on the ignition and backed up. Her usual
route home was in the direction of the screams, but she decided to take the long way.
About half a mile away from her neighborhood, she couldn't see through the smoke.
She knew something was wrong, so she sped the acceleration of her small Honda. Her
eyes widened when something landed on her car. It was a man, she realized, and felt a
tinge of panic when she realized he had no legs; his muscles still clinging in chinks. He
groaned at her as he pulled back his arm and punched the windshield. Reflexively, as she
screamed, she slammed her foot on the brake, sending him twenty feet ahead of her, at a
speed no human could survive. She heard a tap at her passenger side window; she jumped
when she saw a bloodied palm pressed against it. She looked closer and saw her
husband's face, pure and untouched, she smiled a reached to unlock the door. She looked
at his eyes and saw the same in-human look, gold and grey, she slowly backed away from
the window and pushed on the gas pedal.
With tears in her eyes she looked up at the nearest skyscraper and saw an airplane crash
in slow motion. Dharma couldn't pry her eyes off the horrific view. Unknowing to
Dharma, sat two cars, motionless in the lane she was in. She crashed into them, she
whipped forward, her head hitting the steering wheel.
She opened her door and staggered out. Her eyes struggled to focus through the blood as
she wandered out in the middle of the intersection. The last thing she heard was the
blaring of a horn…
