PART ONE

Aang watched her as she twirled a twig in her hand, her shiny brunette hair fanning out behind her in the wind, and his heart melted. He had felt this way for months. At first, he had thought something was wrong with him, but then he realized that it was something else. Something that could be either horrible for them, or the best thing to happen to both of them in a long time.

Suddenly a revelation came upon him, and he knew what he must do. He slowly came out from behind the tree he was leaning on, and crept up behind her. He sat with her on the dock, their feet dangling by the water's edge, her at least 3 inches longer than his. After a few minutes (or hours as it felt to Aang) he finally spoke up.

"N-n-nice weather we're having," he stuttered out.

Now Katara knew something was wrong. Aang was definitely not the type to not say what's on his mind.

"Aang, what's wrong?" she asked in a caring tone.

Here it comes, he thought. Oh no.

"Well, honestly…"

PART TWO

"…I kinda like you," he said truthfully.

Now Katara was freaking out. She had foreseen this for months now. Aang had gotten all…weird around her. Every time she would try and make eye contact, he would look away as if she were poisonous. "Yeah. I like you too. As a friend". She knew very well that that wasn't what Aang meant at all.

"Why don't you like me?" Aang queried, trying very hard not to cry.

"I do like you, just not like that. It's complicated…I'm so sorry," Katara replied, tears threatening to fall.

Two years ago, Katara was going out with a boy named Ming-Se. They were young, but had plans for the future. They were meant to be. He was a water bender like her. Just like that. She would never see him again. All because of the Fire Nation. She could never tell anyone this though. It hurt too much to think about him every waking moment, and then realize that he was gone.

She stood up quickly and walked away. Aang lingered by the dock, then had an idea and dashed after her.

"Maybe in a few years?" he asked hopefully.

"Maybe," Katara replied with a sad smile.

She loved him, too. But she feared that if she were with him, she would get her heart broken again. And she couldn't let that happen. But maybe someday…someday….
