Emerald. That's the first thing I associated with him. Back when we had first met when I was three, his eyes engulfed me until I was swimming in green. They were so pure and honest... I've never dealt with that. When life was hazy with smoke and echoing with fighting words, his voice was angelic.

I was smitten, I admit it. Eight years later and still going strong, I couldn't wait for him to finally realize that I'm the one. That we were meant to live and be with one another. I had been hoping and striving for that until... Until he realized he was madly and deeply in love.

In love with Sarah Bennette, that is. Surprisingly, I wasn't angry with the girl. Jealous, but not mad. She had what I wanted. And... Its better that I was the one to suffer, instead of her.

My gaze broke from my tray full of food to said giggling girl as she leaned in and pecked her boyfriend (and my soulmate) on the cheek. Phil gained a goofy grin and looked lovingly at his beloved.

'Why couldn't that be me?' I asked for the hundredth time that minute. I should just stop thinking that. I mean, why would he fall for me.

I had regular hair, not silky and smooth. My eyes were nearly flat. No sparkle. No glimmer about me. But... But, Sarah? Dark chocolate hair? When in the light showed dark red and almost purple? With eyes that could be seen as light brown, but were better associated with warm gold? How could I-

The bell rang. The world around me stood up and shifted, but I just sat there waiting to leave. As students streamed, the happy couple passed by and I couldn't help my self. Sarah was looking the other way but Phil... He caught my gaze and I was immediately a deer. He smiled soft like butter and murmured a greeting and like that, he was gone.

I stood with a daze. Maybe... Maybe that means something. Maybe there's hope after all.

And just like that, I was trapped in the Tango Shortman.

A/N: Howdy, y'all! Now let me explain. This person could be whomever you want it to be. Boy, girl, you, friend, whatever. It's what you make it out to be. And about the tango thing...

The TANGO Maureen!

It's a dark dizzy merry-go-round.

As she keeps you dangling-!

You're wrong!

You're HEART she is mangling!

It's different, with me.

And you toss and you turn,

'Cuz her cold eyes can burn

And you churn and you yearn and REbound.

...I think I know what you mean...

The Tango... Maureen.

...Too much RENT, what can I say? I don't own it, unfortunately. Or even Phillip Shortman (that little heartbreaker -_-). Buuuut, I digress. Hope y'all enjoyed! Oh, and ask questions for the Q&A aaaaaand make sure to check out starrynights1987's Shortman fics. Same character, interesting plot-lines, edited by me, Supr approved... What's not to love?
