Reba sighed. She had a pounding headache
"Jake I'm warning you"
"You're not the boss of me"
Jake had been like that ever since Elizabeth was born.
"I'm going to count to three"
"So what? I'm going to count to six"
Reba felt like she was going to cry. What happened to her son. He used to be so sweet

Jake put up the middle finger
"Go to your room"
"No!"
"I said go to your room young man"
"And I said no"
Just then Elizabeth started crying. Jake threw the rattle at her missing her by only a little bit
"That does it," Reba said, "you're in trouble
"What else is new bitch"
Without even thinking about it Reba's hand shot out and smacked Jake across the face. Jack stood there for a moment stunned. His mother had never hit him before. Well, correction, she spanked him once when he bit his cousin... but those were light swats over her knee through jeans, not a hard slap across the face.
Reba also stood stunned.
"Jake"
"Go away. I hate you!"
"Well I love you"
"Oh yeah right"
"Jake, listen to me," Reba said gently but firmly putting her hands on his shoulder, "you are my baby and I will always love you"
"If you loved me you wouldn't have hurt me"
"That was a mistake on my part Jake but I was angry and I acted without thinking"
"Well I was angry when I bit my cousin and I was angry when I threw that at Elizabeth. Ever since she came alone you've been ignoring me and punishing me"
"Jake," she said, "I never meant to make you feel unloved. I never meant to make you feel like I was ignoring you. I love you so much you have no idea"
"Really?"
"Yes. And I promise I will NEVER hurt you again"
Tears streaming down both of their faces Reba pulled her son into a hug
"I love you mommy"
