Cold Feet

"Nikolas?" Britt asks timidly as the two lie together in bed.

"Hm?" he answers.

"There's something I need to tell you," she says after a deep breath and Nikolas wait patiently for her to continue but she doesn't say anything. She tries, but nothing comes out.

This happens every time she starts to tell the truth about Ben; she gets cold feet and changes her story. Sometimes, she swears she can feel the chill creep up her toes. It slithers all the way to her heart—makes her chest ache with guilt. By now, with all the times she had attempted to tell the truth, her feet must be frozen solid. And no matter what she does, she can't thaw them. The ice spreads further and she feels like she's drowning in her guilt.

She's a coward and she knows it. She knows it every time she looks at Nikolas. Every time she sees Dante and Lulu. And she damn well knows it every single time she holds Ben.

A little part of her desperately wishes that her mother would just blurt out the secret but she's terrified of the outcome. She can just picture the nasty look Nikolas will throw her. The hurt and fury she'll see in Dante and Lulu. And the thing that may scare her the most: losing Ben. She cannot bear to lose him and she will if the truth comes out. She'll be all alone again. No Ben. No Nikolas. Not even Spencer. No one to give a damn about her.

She can't help but wonder if she really is a monster like her parents.

"Never mind," she says instead. If the truth comes out, it won't be from her and she'll do her best to makes sure it won't come from her mother. Britt decides that her secret will be fine for now and she leaves Nikolas to go check on Ben and get ready for work.

While the truth may melt the ice, she's sure she'll drown in the water.
