"Never Far Apart"

Ten year old Celine aka Cornelia Casey's blue eyes filled with tears as she listened to the last notes of the song fade into the distance. She knew what that meant, even though a part of her didn't want to believe it was true.

But as her eyes rested on the spot where Andrew had been moments before, she couldn't deny the truth any longer.

Heart wrenching sobs filled the silence just then. The sobs of a little girl who had just lost the one best friend she had.

Celine didn't even notice Monica sit down beside her. The first indication that she wasn't alone was when the Irish angel pulled her into a comforting hug.

Celine struggled for a moment, not wanting to be held right now. SHE just wanted to be left alone.

"No!" She shouted, trying to break away from Monica's gentle hold. "No! Let me go! Let me go! Put me down! Just leave me alone! Just leave me alone!"

Monica shook her head as she held the distraught child close.

"I'm sorry; Celine, but I can't do that. I can't do it because I care about you too much."

"No you don't!" Celine shouted. She had stopped fighting for the moment, but she was still highly upset. "You don't care about me! And neither does Petey!"

"Yes he did. " Monica assured the young girl. "Petey cared for you greatly. And so do I. But more importantly, so does God. He loves you so much, Celine. HE knows you're hurtin'. He wants to help you. But there's somethin' you need to understand."

Celine's blue eyes locked with Monica's brown ones for the first time since the Irish angel had tried to comfort her.

"What's that?" Celine asked.

"Even though Petey is gone from this earth, he will never be far away from you. Because he'll always be in here." Monica pointed to Celine's heart before locking eyes with the wee girl once again. "So you see, you can never be apart from him because he'll always be with you."

"It's not the same!" Celine cried, the tears coming thick and fast once again.

"I know it's not. But you and Petey had somethin' special. Your friendship was a special one. And that's somethin' that can never be severed. It will live on and as long as you remember the good times you had and the special times you had, you will never forget him."

It took Celine a while, but she was finally able to calm down. She knew deep down in her heart that Monica spoke the truth. And even though she was goin' to miss Petey terribly, as long as she kept his memory alive, they would never be far apart from one another.

Later that night, Celine lay in bed, thinking about the past few days. She hugged the bear Petey had given her, taking comfort in its fur.

As the little girl drifted off, she touched the bracelet Celine Dionne had given her before whispering softly, "Good night, Petey. I love you. And I promise, I'll never forget our friendship or what you did for me." With that, the girl drifted off to sleep, a content smile on her face.
