Disclaimer: I do not own Lord of the Rings nor do I own Lothiriel or Eomer. They all belong mainly to J.R.R. Tolkien and partially to New Line Cinemas.
Author's Note: I do not know if the marriage between Eomer and Lothiriel had been arranged or if it was for love, so in my stories it's been arranged. If you enjoyed this Read and Review. Flames will be used to warm Bajor. Thanks! ;-).
In the cold moonlight
Lothiriel, the wife of King Eomer of Rohan, was curled up by a window, looking towards the east.
For many the east was a place to fear, a place where evil dwelled.
But for her it was a comforting place, the place where the sun rose every day.
As a young girl in Dol Amroth, she would get up early every morning and go to a bluff overlooking the sea to watch the spectacular light show.
A sound across the room broke into her memories and she glanced at the man in the bed.
He was kind in his own way but Lothiriel doubted she would ever truly love him.
She had married him for political reasons and she was fond of him, but as a child she had never thought of being "fond" of her husband, she had thought of being madly in love with him.
She opened the window a few inches and shivered as the freezing wind swept over her, it was winter in Rohan and she was still getting used to it.
Dol Amroth was by the sea, and it stayed fairly warm there all year.
It also never snowed.
She had always loved the wild storms that could rise from the sea and would dash the waves upon the rocks with a force she couldn't imagine and she loved hearing rain pattering on a roof but she loathed that white powder that fell from the sky, covering everything in its cold blanket.
A distant sound came from the city and she realized that it was a bell ringing out the hour.
It was five in the morning.
As she leaned forward to close the window, a slivery apparition froze her.
The moon had come out from behind the clouds and bathed Edoras and the snow that covered it in a pure, cold light.
She gasped in surprise and wonder.
For the first time since coming to Edoras she actually looked at the city.
The moon caused every shadow to disappear and turned the snow to a delicate silver covering.
She felt the faintest stirrings of love in her for Edoras and Rohan.
She risked another glance at her husband and again love moved within her.
In the chill breeze and cold light, all the pain she had been holding in melted and only love remained.
She had hated leavening Dol Amroth and so in revenge she had denied everyone, including herself, love.
As she sat staring out the window a hand moved past her eyes and gently shut it.
She turned her head and saw Eomer sitting next to her, a confused look on his face.
"What are you doing?" he asked simply.
She couldn't hold it in any longer, she started to cry and to her amazement she found herself in his arms, sobbing onto his shoulder.
Gradually, she managed to force out broken words of apology.
She didn't know how long they sat there, but the tears finally dried and she wiped her hand across her blurry eyes.
"I'm sorry, you must think I'm a fool," she whispered.
But Eomer wasn't looking at her, his gaze had turned toward the window and she too followed it.
The sun was rising and bathing the city in its warm, friendly light.
A new day had dawned for Edoras and for Lothiriel it meant more then words could express.
It would take time but her broken heart would repair itself.
It would not be what it had been, but it would be whole.
