Unrequited LoveIt had just gone twelve in the afternoon on day two. The Noon report had been finished, and Yukie now knew that Takiguchi and Hatagami were both goners. The list was getting longer as the hours went on. She was still sat by Shuya's bedside after Sugimara had brought him in.
Letting him stay to recover hadn't been a hard choice. She did, after all, have a crush on him. The hard part was that some of the other girls didn't trust boys, and those who did were teasing Yukie about her crush. What's more, Yuko was on edge with Shuya being there, after she had witnessed his run-in with Oki the previous day. Still, they had to help him. The incident with the transfer student (whoever he was) had certainly taken its toll on both Shuya and Sugimara. Shuya came off the worst, as he needed bandages around his chest, his legs and his forehead. Even Sugimara was limping, but the injury wasn't too serious so he was able to go.
While she was there, one thought crossed Yukie's mind more than ever: How can I admit my feelings to Shuya when he comes round? She knew it had to be done, but it still played on her mind without respite. She kept asking herself over and over again: How will he react; what will he think of me; could it even be unrequited love? While she considered how to explain herself, Yukie lay alongside Shuya as he slept, and closed her eyes herself. Even if it wasn't for very long, it was nice to sleep alongside him, just the once.
