His thick skin makes blisters on her calloused hands as she strokes him, ever so gently, her heart beating like a drum.
She is deadly calm, her lips forming soothing words and gentle tones, but her heart is racing and her soul shudders.
And he knows. He knows.
He smiles at her, but quickly takes it back, as baring his teeth unnerves her, and the others, even more.
They are ever so scared of him.
Well, he can't blame them, can he.
No one knows it, but he's been able to think like this for some time.
And it comforts him, being able to remember her gentle voice and her gentle touch.
Because he knows, in any other scenario, she would never be like this. Not to him.
To Barton, maybe.
When Barton lands the quinjet and he sees redheaded children running out, his heart leaps frantically and his eyes flash green.
But he swallows it down.
It's over. He's lost. Before the battle even began.
And he cannot describe the relief he felt when Laura came out.
To this day, no one knows why he likes her so much.
He is a clever man. A rocket scientist, at that.
It doesn't take a lot for him to realise why his heart pounds every time someone mentions her.
It doesn't take a lot for him to realise that he can only hurt her.
And so, with a bitter taste in his mouth and a heavy heart, he presses the button and leaves.
Her worried face on the screen forever imprinted in his mind.
