The explosion was audible even from the entrance hall far above, where he and Minerva had cornered the last of the Death Eaters facing them.

"Hermione..." he gasped.

"Severus!" Minerva shrieked as he whipped about and ran down the stairs to the dungeons.

She'd been in their rooms with the baby when the surprise attack on Hogwarts began. Severus knew because he, in the headmaster's office at the time, had stuck his head in the fireplace to warn her, knowing she wouldn't have been able to hear the crashing in of the gates from down there. They had known, dammit. Someone had tipped them off Dumbledore was in London.

It looked like Hermione had barely managed to grab her wand and run to the stairs before the Lestranges had emerged at the bottom and trapped her.

She must have put up an incredible fight to have lasted against them as long as she did. But apparently, she'd also found there was no way she could defeat both with conventional dueling tactics.

The hole she'd blown throw the stone wall next to them had exploded with enough force to immediately kill them both. They lay blank-eyed on the floor in splattered pools of blood. The enormous boulders of debris that had hit them were scattered around the corridor and had even cracked the wall on the opposite side.

But she couldn't control the way the wall had blown out.

Severus skidded to a halt when he saw her.

"Hermione! NO!"

He lept over Bellatrix's body and ran to his wife's side, then crouched and wrapped his arms around her prone form, trying to stop the tears welling in his eyes.

"I guess... I didn't realize... my own strength," she choked out, attempting a small wry smile.

"Hermione, I - I'm going to get you to Pomfrey. S-she can..."

"Oh, Severus..." she whispered, reaching up to wipe the tears running down his cheeks, clearly straining harder with each movement. She smiled with placid acceptance, never looking away from his eyes. "Just... take... good care... of our son."

She expired in his arms.

He screamed for all the world to hear, then buried his face in the top of her hair and sobbed.
