Zara's Birthday Story (One-Shot)

Two figures are sitting on the trunk of fallen tree, staring out to sea the taller of the two biting his lip. The other has a blank look of shock on her face. She turns to the boy and opens her mouth. She closes it again and leans towards him, peering into his eyes.

"You're telling me that werewolves and vampires actually exist?" she asks a little doubtfully. He nods his head and she starts to smile. "I knew it. Ha take that mummy. I told you they were real. Shannon will be so excited."

"You can't tell anyone!" the boy says grabbing her upper arms.

"I have to. I can't keep anything from Shannon. If I don't tell her it will come blurting out some random time in front of some random strangers."

"Will she tell anyone?"

"She'll probably tell the whole world if she could, but the people who know her won't believe her, she's been saying this stuff since she was nine."

"What a sad child."

"Hey! That's my best friend you are talking about. Well actually you may be correct." She ponders this for a minute before standing up and walking up to the tree's to lay on the grass.

"Zara, are you really okay with this? You can leave and never look back if you want."

"I can't Seth, and to be honest I don't want to." Seth smiled a brilliant smile and grabbed Zara by the face and kissed her. When they separated Seth was still grinning and Zara had a dazed look on her face.

"What was that for?" She asks. He shrugs his shoulders and looks up into the canopy above them.

"Does there need to be a reason?" he asks.

"No. I was just curious." She shrugs. He smiles at her and rolls on his side to look at her. Her eyes closed and her face tranquil. As if she could fell the heat of his gaze she opens her eyes and her green eyes stare back into his dark ones. "Can I see it?" she asks quietly, not looking away from his eyes.

"See what?" he asks in confusion.

"You turning into a wolf."

"No. But I can go behind those bushes change and then show you?"

"Why won't you change in front of me?"

"Because I don't want you to see me naked."

"Oh. Well off you go then. But hurry."

"Sir, yes sir!"

"Oi, no lip, mister." She smiles sweetly at him and he grins back, walking into the bushed surrounding the clearing. She sits and waits for him to come back, fidgeting with barely suppressed excitement. Out of the bushes in front of her comes a head. With a couple of steps forward the rest of the animal can be seen. It sits in front of Zara and looks her in the eye giving her a wolfish grin. She slowly stands up and walks slowly towards the giant wolf. She puts her hand on the sandy coloured fur of its head and strokes in a downward motion on his neck. He closes his eyes and nudges her hip with his nose.

"Your just so cute. You have to show Shannon this when she comes over next week, she'll love it. And that way I won't have to get her a birthday present." She smiles and the wolf licks her hand.
