A small smile graced his lips before fading away quickly.
Everything had been going so well; at least, that's what he thought.
Maybe he talked too much? Maybe he was blind or ignorant. It was most likely the last one really.
The blond boy glanced back at the photo, running his fingers over it. He missed him a lot. He felt as if there was a hole in his heart, a spot missing where the gentle, strong willed friend used to be.
"Joey! Are you almost ready for work?" Alex called up the stairs. Joey wheeler frowned before bellowing out
"Yes I'm almost ready! I'll be down in a minute!" he rolled his eyes. He was always on his back! At least he meant well. He snapped his attention back to the photo.
They were smiling in it. Yugi had a brilliant smile, always had.
They had managed to keep their relationship quiet for a very long time. It all started with a bit of live action role playing, just for kicks but . . . then they were close and, Joey actually made the first move. He remembered how the kiss went; very slow and unsure but confident.
Their relationship progressed fast and had a few downfalls. Sometimes they would go months without speaking. Once it almost hit a year. He knew how long. Ten and a half months. That's how long they stayed apart.
He remembered how Yugi confessed his love but . . . he didn't know if he returned it. Now he knew.
He did love Yugi, just not as much as Yugi loved him.
Joey had to admit this whole thing was his fault. He was self-centered and focused on his life and goals . . . and Alex. Alex is Duke's cousin that he's had a thing for. Five years he liked him. Mind you he knew Yugi longer. But the second Alex took an interest in him, Yugi hit the back seat.
However, Yugi had been distancing himself from Joey more and more, breaking off arrangements for sleepovers and such. They hadn't talked in nearly half a year but hadn't seen each other for almost two. It hurt. He had so many photos and memories of them that he had to put away. It was just bringing back memories that he could not relive.
He knew he hurt the other a lot and it hurt him knowing that. He just wished Yugi would at least hear his apology.
He was sorry he's so self-centred. Sorry he put Yugi behind someone he barely knew. He was sorry he destroyed their friendship and hurt the other boy. Sorry he seemed to not care.
However, Yugi's grandpa was getting old now. Really old and they all knew it. The second he passed away and Joey found out, welcome or not, he would be at Yugi's door step. They could slam the door in his face and he wouldn't care. He needed Yugi to know that, no matter what, no matter how long they stayed apart, he would always be there when Yugi needed him. He would always accept him back into his life, even if things couldn't be quite like they used to be.
He's still be there when they were 80 years old, even if it had been 60 years since they last talked and do his best to go and see him. He would hold his hand when something went wrong and, even with Alzheimer's he'd never be able to forget his best friend, his companion, his Yugi.
