Neela's eyes felt heavy. She wanted to open them, really she did but some evil person had attached weights to them whilst she slept. The more she thought about it the more she was convinced that someone had attached weights to her entire body. She tried to move but found she was trapped. 'Christ what happened last night?' she thought.
'Okay I'm on my back. That's a start.' She tried to move her arms 'Right arm free, left arm… missing?' After what felt like minutes she managed to wiggle her fingers. The movement elicited a moan… and not from her. She froze. 'What the hell?' She could feel a confused panic starting to rise in her chest.
'Think, Neela. Think!' She tried moving her fingers again. This time no sound occurred but the weight on top of her shifted. 'Okay. I remember alcohol being involved, and a movie? Yes, there was definitely something on TV'
Neela could feel herself waking up more fully. Slowly, bits and pieces of the previous evening started to infiltrate her memory.
It had been a rough day so she'd come home and had a bath. She'd then decided to end the evening with an old film, a bottle of wine and some ice cream. 'This is good, film, wine, ice cream we're making progress!'
Ten minutes into the film the doorbell had rung. She remembered being a little annoyed and a lot tipsy but had gone to answer it anyway.
"Abby." The name came out in a whisper and Neela finally managed to get one of her eyelids to cooperate and open. 'Oh God.' There on her chest was a mass of brown hair and attached to it was a distinctly Abby shaped body.
Images started to rush into her mind. Settling Joe in the bedroom, sharing ice cream, finishing one bottle of wine and opening another.
'I knew Abby shouldn't be drinking so why did I encourage her?' Deep down Neela knew the answer but didn't want to give it a voice. She'd been selfish, enjoying the company of a friend who, that night had needed her not to ask questions.
Opening her eyes she used her free hand to brush back the loose strands of hair covering her sleeping companion's face. It was that movement and what was revealed that brought the rest of the night's activities crashing back.
She stared at the glaringly obvious and evidently new bruise forming on Abby's neck before squeezing her eyes shut again.
"Bloody Hell!"
