Disclaimer: I own neither Torchwood nor Avenue Q. I just play with them. And may possibly give them back...one day.

This song is entitled "It's A Fine Fine Line" and is sung by Kate Monster in Avenue Q. I was singing it to myself while brushing my teeth and this bunny popped into my head with this songfic idea.

Ianto sat on Jack's bed in shock, holding the blankets close around him and breathing in the deep scent of cinnamon and a gentle muskiness. A scent that was completely Jack.

There's a fine, fine line between a lover and a friend;
There's a fine, fine line between reality and pretend;
And you never know 'til you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb.

Ianto thought that Jack truly cared for him. That Jack truly loved him and intended to keep all the promises he had made.

There's a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of time.

Apparently, Ianto had thought wrong.

There's a fine, fine line between a fairy tale and a lie;
And there's a fine, fine line between "You're wonderful" and "Goodbye."

For at the first sign of Jack's disappearance, Ianto knew where he had vanished to. And Ianto couldn't blame his lover. No matter how hard he tried to be angry at Jack for leaving, he fell into misery.

I guess if someone doesn't love you back it isn't such a crime,
But there's a fine, fine line between love

All those hours spent together, all those days. Visiting zoo's (Jack had a weird obsession with zoo's) and museums and films. Dinners and lunches. All the nights screwing each other senseless or just lying in comfort, each holding the other close, never wanting to feel alone again.

Yet here was Ianto Jones. Alone.

And a waste of your time.

Shouting from the Hub. Ianto sniffled and looked up out of the hatch that led into Jack's office. As the shouting continued, Ianto slowly realized hat they were not shouts of fear, but shouts of happiness. Slowly he stumbled over to the ladder and climbed up. Standing behind Jack's desk and observing the scene below, Ianto felt his mouth drop in astonishment and new tears surge.

Jack calmly walked over to Ianto, who was still clutching the bed sheet like a lifeline. Jack placed his hands on Ianto's shoulders, gazing deep into his lovers eyes before pulling Ianto into a soft kiss.

Ianto melted briefly into Jack's mouth, before anger surged through him. Pushing himself off of Jack and breaking the kiss, Ianto glared at Jack Harkness and slapped him right across the cheek before stalking off to the archives.

And I don't have the time to waste on you anymore.
I don't think that you even know what you're looking for.
For my own sanity, I've got to close the door
And walk away...
Oh...

Five months later and Ianto was still hurting. Every time he wanted to apologize to Jack he couldn't. Every time he yearned for answers, he convinced himself he didn't want to know.

Eventually Ianto caved in. After everyone had left the Hub, he brewed some of his best coffee and gave it to Jack, sitting himself on the edge of Jack's desk as he did so.

There's a fine, fine line between together and not
And there's a fine, fine line between what you wanted and what you got.
You gotta go after the things you want while you're still in your prime...

They talked throughout the night, clearing all the issues, finding where they stand. Glancing at his watch, Ianto was shocked to find it read three in the morning. He stood to go. Jack followed him down the steps to the tourist office before pulling him into the sweetest and chaste of kisses.

There's a fine, fine line between love
And a waste of time.
