Chapter 1:
You can't hold onto things forever. The prison is gone and everyone is scattered. We don't have a home anymore. It was the first time in a while we ever felt safe and now it's gone.
Daryl and Beth were all alone. The silence was filling the air and for the first time he had no idea what to do or say. All Daryl could think about was Hershel, how everything went from being safe to being blown to bits. He looked over at Beth and saw her bloodshot eyes staring off into space. What to say, what to say Daryl thought. What can you really say to someone who just watched their loved one die right in front of them. " Beth…." Daryl said, " I'm sorry you had to see that." Beth didn't respond. " I know how you feel though… I too had to watch my father die right in front of me, I had the choice to end his life myself but when I pointed the gun I just couldn't do it, I couldn't picture shooting him, I wasn't strong enough." Daryl said.
"What happened to your dad Daryl?" Beth said.
"He got bit. It was just when this shit started happening. We were out hunting and I heard him scream. I saw him lying on the ground in pain, my uncle told me to shoot him but I just couldn't so he took the gun and shot him, right in front of me."
"I'm sorry…" Beth replied. "Have you ever told anyone else besides me?"
"Honestly, I've never been the emotional type. I would keep everything bottled up inside." Daryl choked up.
Beth put a hand on Daryl's shoulder to calm him. "It's okay to cry Daryl. But, you can't keep your feelings bottled up forever."
Daryl looks over at Beth and sees that she's crying, she won't look at him though. "I miss my dad Daryl." She can't stop crying, then suddenly Daryl stands up, wraps his arms around her and says…
"We'll be alright. We can still get through this. Soon we'll find the rest of the group and move on. I promise." Tears drip down his face and all he hears is silence.
