All of a sudden, she was crashing; tumbling in a downwards spiral, unable to control her plummet.
Fiona Coyne woke with a start, palms sweaty and heart racing. She tried to calm herself as the tremors passed, while reaching for her "water" bottle on the night stand.
"It's okay Fiona, it was only a nightmare. It's over now." Her thoughts were meant to reassure, thought she knew she didn't fully believe them quite yet. Unable to fall back asleep, Fiona let her mind drift to the places she kept restricted during the day. At night, the memories of Bobby flooded in past the levees she so meticulously upheld.
Nicest, sweetest, utmost in everything; It's so charming, very charming.
"Hey, Fiona Coyne, right?" the boy inquired, extending a hand. Daintily, Fiona shook it, and with a shy smile responded, "This is she. Who's asking?"
"Bobby Beckonridge." So this was the boy mother had been telling her about. Not bad.
Fiona shuddered, pulling herself back into reality. The Bobby she had met that first day at Vanderbilt was only a guise for the monster within, she convinced herself. This was the boy that had bruised her, struck her, and thrown her down a flight of stairs.
"Stop it!" Fiona shouted, directed at herself, hoping her outburst hadn't woken Declan. She couldn't allow herself to dwell on the topic, especially not on the memories of the humiliation caused by Bobby's deposition…
Well reckon play the fool, no one's ill at ease and put the deepest Swiss bank trust in you
No one saw it coming.
The first signs of the approaching dawn shone through the window. The day's events loomed in the imminent future, and Fiona quietly sighed. Reaching to take another sip from the bottle, Fiona clung to the dresser, staggering, and began to get ready. Deep inside, she knew that no amount of alcohol would prepare her enough for her testimony later that day. Fiona raised the plastic ring to her mouth once more, feeling the liquid rush to meet her welcoming lips. She wasn't ready to let go of the one thing that could both cloud her thoughts and keep her sane. Not yet.
So high on life you should try it, you know
Come on while no one's looking.
Aha! Caught you now. Caught you red-handed in the biscuit tin,
Cost you to keep me quiet.
