Chapter UNO
"AHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Here we go again, you'd think he'd be still moping about the move, hmph. There is no justice in the world. These were the thoughts that ran through the head of the soaking wet sixteen-going-on-seventeen year old girl who had just woken up thanks to a gallon of water being poured on her. "Sean," she said it warningly as she towered over her ten-year-old brother who then let out the girliest scream she'd ever heard in her life and took off out of the room and down the stairs. The little rascal was lucky enough to get his powers at his age and was always using them at the most inconvenient moments.
"Gabriella I'd appreciate it if you'd stop torturing your brother and find some time to look decent for your first day of school," her mother yelled up the stairs and she could practically see the taunting face of her little brother in her mind's eye. Gabriella thought about shouting 'he started it' back down but then decided to keep what was left of her maturity and just listen to her mother.
Gabriella Rosemont slammed her door and slid back under the covers of her bed, screw the first day of school! Just 'cause she made us move doesn't mean she can make me go. She was still mad at the sudden move her mother had made the family (of three) make right before the school year but didn't really have the heart to actually act on it. She knew that even though her mother refused to tell her the reasons why they moved so rapidly that they must have been good, otherwise there was no way she would've let them leave the place that Gabriella and Sean had grown up in.
She sighed and then threw the covers off of her, her mother knew she had Gabby eating out of the palm of her hand most of the time and every once in a while she liked to take advantage of that. While her mother and little brother (from hell) made a breakfast downstairs Gabriella went through her wardrobe with little interest.
"This all depends on if I actually care to be liked or not…" she took a look at one half of her closet and then at the other before deciding to go comfortable she pulled on her favorite pair of worn out jeans that almost had holes in the knees, a bright green shirt that said 'STUPIDITY, how's that working for you?', green converse, a couple bracelets, and her stud earrings. She walked downstairs throwing her hair in a messy bun and yawning while her mother became her walking checklist.
"You have your lunch right?"
"Mum, I think I'm old enough to make my own sandwiches."
"I know but it's tradition for me to make you one on the first day!"
"Right…"
"You have your keys?"
"Yes."
"What about your cell phone? You have that right? I didn't spend fifty million dollars on it so you can lose it just when you need it! What if you get kidnapped–"
"–and the kidnappers allow me one call? Don't worry I have my phone just in case that unlikely situation does come."
"You know your classes right?"
"They give out the schedules the first day, remember your first day at Sky High?"
"I know I know, just checking. And you know where to go in case you need something?"
"Straight to the principal's office."
"Or you can ask one of the upperclassmen, I know they can seem intimidating–"
"Mom, I'm a junior. I think I can handle myself."
"Alright, alright. What about–"
"MOTHER!"
"Okay fine. Sorry, I'm just a little nervous."
Gabriella chuckled, "That's funny 'cause I thought I was supposed to be the nervous one."
"I think it's called first-day-itis. It's what the parents catch when they're sending their babies off to school the first day."
At this her child rolled her eyes, "I hardly call seventeen year old a baby." Then she looked at her watch really quickly before grabbing her lucky lighter off the kitchen table as well as a bagel. She hugged her mom and gave her brother a noogie before leaving the house with a last, "Goodbye Mom. I'll be fine!"
She munched on her bagel as she walked down the street and looked around in fascination. They had just moved there two days prior and it was amazing at how well the three of them adjusted to fast to everything around here. Her mother looked at home in this 'American Dream' type neighborhood and now that Sean actually had kids to play with he was having the time of his life. Gabriella however had left many friends behind in her hometown and wasn't sure if it had really hit her yet that this was a completely different state and that if she pinched herself she wouldn't wake up. The last week she had been very calm about everything and she was sure everything would catch up with her soon.
Finally reaching the street corner she looked around and spotted no bus so she plopped herself down on the curb and discarded the rest of the bagel.
"Did you know that's littering?"
"Did you know it's biodegradable?" She answered the voice not even phased. The person seemed to ponder this for a second as another chuckled before they both sat themselves down right beside her. A girl dressed in almost completely green grinned at her and stuck her hand out, "Layla."
Gabriella looked blankly at her as the guy beside her chuckled some more. Then the girl tried again, "My name is Layla."
"Gabriella," and they shook hands.
"This is Will, he's my boyfriend," Mr. Chuckles gave a little wave before turning his gaze back to the street, letting his girlfriend continue the 'Welcome' speech. "Are you new here? I don't remember seeing anyone else at this stop."
Trying to figure out how much she should say to this stranger she opened her mouth to answer before a yellow bus came barreling towards them. They jumped up off the curb and the bus came hurtling to a stop. Gabriella almost laughed out loud at all the people yelling in pain as their heads hit the seats in front of them, "RON!" One kid called out in complaint.
The bus driver opened the door and then the three teenagers looked at each other uncertainly. "Layla, Will? You guys coming?" The bus driver interrupted the staring contest and the two got on the bus. Then with some hesitation she looked at the man, "Are you Ron Wilson?"
The slightly chubby guy beamed at her and shook her hand wildly once she was within arm reach, "Yes I am, and you are?"
"Oh I'm Gabriella Rosemont, my mom said to look for a Ron Wilson to make sure I got on the right bus," the guy gave her an understanding nod before letting her make her way towards the middle near the people who sat with her earlier. She sat behind Will & Layla, next to a guy with freakishly white hair.
Layla turned around in her seat to look at the new girl, "I'm sorry we were looking at you strangely, we just didn't know if you know… knew about this. Well I mean we just didn't know if you were powerful-- oh wait that's not right either." She was cut off by Gabriella's laugh.
"No problem, I was thinking the same thing," this received her a smile from Layla who then began to point off and introduce her to people on the bus.
"The guy next to you is Zach, that's his on-and-off-again girlfriend Maj over there with the purple hair and clothing, and the one sitting next to her is Ethan. Oh and you'll meet Warren later." Ethan stuck his hand out to Gabriella.
"Pleasure to meet you!" Gabriella shook his hand and smiled in return before turning back to Layla.
"So…" she began before Layla laughed.
"Just in case you're curious, which I can tell you are, I'll tell you everyone's powers. Will over here is super strong & he can fly, Zach can glow – no Zach you can't show her right now! It's too bright – Maj can shape shift into a guinea pig – it's really cute! – Ethan can melt, and Warren is a powerful pyrokinetic. Oh yeah and I can control plants."
Will snorted at this and added teasingly, "Not very well though, she still can't make a lemon." Layla just elbowed him lightly and turned her attention back to Gabriella who was soaking all this in.
"Right so… Hippie, Superman, Glowstick, Popsicle, annnd Guinea Pig." Then she broke out into a grin, "sounds awesome." The rest of the group laughed and then Layla asked what her power was.
"It's sort of… weird-ish." She didn't want to freak out the only people who seemed sincerely friendly towards her, the new girl, but decided it was only fair so she could see if they were truly worth befriending anyway. "Well. I guess I'm sort of like Will in a way cause I was lucky enough to inherit both of my parents powers." Everyone nodded and Gabriella looked around for something to demonstrate on. Then she looked at Ethan's glasses and soon they were floating in midair and then landed on her own face.
"You're telekinetic!" Layla shouted, getting it first.
Everyone in the group seemed genuinely interested so she went on. "Yeah, I inherited that from my mother. From my father I got a different one but it's hard to explain." At this point she took out her silver Zippo lighter that had 'Gabby' carved on it. She flicked it open and pulled the flame onto her open palm. All eyes watched as she made the flame dance, grow bigger, shrink, move around, and then finally go out.
"So… you're a pyrokinetic?" Zach asked not really getting it since he'd never seen Warren use a lighter to power up before and Gabriella just sighed.
"Not exactly. See I can do that to any element. I cannot however conjure up it on my own like fire coming out of my hands or water spouting out of my fingertips. I also cannot do large amounts of that in a short amount of time." Seeing she lost them she gave an example, "I can't put out a burning building without almost fainting, I can't move large areas of waters, I can't control anything as big as a tornado when it comes to the air, and I cannot grow trees as high as a three story building without needing to rest."
Everyone now had an 'O' look on their faces and Gabrielle just smiled, glad that they could just make small talk during the rest of the bus ride after the big introductions were done (and after she was done screaming her head off when they drove off the edge of the bridge). When they finally landed, and by the time they pried Gabrielle's fingers off the handle bar, they were the last ones out of the bus. They all thanked Ron (Gabrielle gave him a hug for getting them "through the god-forsaken sky and clouds alive") and headed up the big steps of the school.
Gabby's mouth dropped when she saw the school first from the window of the bus and now it dropped even further. The place was huge! The steps led up to the entrance like some government building and trees & patches of grass scattered across the front yard and filled with kids greeting each other talking about their summers.
With Maj and Layla on either side of her she listened as they told her who not to mess with, where to sit, who the best teachers were, who she wouldn't want to get, and most importantly- how to find them at lunch. The rest of the group left her at the front of the gym (Maj & Layla gave her supportive hugs while Ethan, Zach, & Will yelled back words of good luck).
Gabby walked into the gym with the freshman who were almost a head shorter than she was so she stuck out like a sore thumb. Just like the freshman though she was looking around in awe at the huge gym and fidgeted when a bright light suddenly appeared flying over them and then turned into their principal.
"Welcome to Sky High." She swept the room with her gaze before continuing, "I hope you all enjoy your stay here and that it is as fun as it is educational! Comets away!" With the final (cheesy) thought she turned back into bright lights and the freshman giggled as she jumped up trying to touch the bright star. When their gazes were turned however they saw a platform being raised with a mean looking teacher on top of it, that must be Coach Boomer. He gave the same speech that Maj told her he would give and then started calling names, as much fun as watching freshman getting humiliated was Gabby got extremely bored before she realized that it would be a while before she was called up since they tried to get the freshman done before her and there were a lot of them this year. So when the lunch bell finally rang Gabby and a couple other people grabbed their things from the bleachers where they had been lounging and made their way out the door.
"We'll continue this AFTER LUNCH!" He yelled the last two with his super power and Gabby winced, he thinks he's so cool just cause he can BREAK MY EAR DRUMS! Idiot.
Grumbling to herself she weaved her way through the halls trying to make sure she looked like she knew what she was doing but before long seven minutes had gone by and she was still wandering in the halls. "Why do these all look the same?" She asked herself before going down another empty hall, the rest of the students had long disappeared so she looked at the door to her left and found the library, "Oh well, this is as good a place as any. I'll apologize to them later for not–" but she was interrupted when another person came rushing out and she was knocked over, landing on her back and getting the wind knocked out of her.
The person held out a hand for her but she just waved it away, "I'm fine. Don't worry." Then she looked up and her last thought before she got lost in the black eyes staring at her was, holy SHIT this guy is hot.
