The surf ebbed back into the waters made inky by night, lapping at our limbs until we were shivering. Laughing through chattered teeth, we didn't care. The cold didn't affect Jacob, and I was too happy being with him to move. That night was our first and last together like this, peaceful and silent and untroubled. Only with him did I stop hurting. Only when he held my hand could I forget about Edward.
There weren't many stars that night. I remember thinking that, perhaps if there were fewer clouds, we could see something beautiful. It didn't matter so much. Our feet sunk into the sand when we walked, salt clinging to our ankles from the ocean spray. We could talk about everything and nothing. Our friendship was easy, a rare relationship where understanding transcended speech. I knew that he was in love with me, and he knew I wished he was someone else.
We sat at the edge of several fragmented rocks, him staring at me while I peered through squinted eyes at the horizon. I thought I saw the sun rising, but it was just my imagination. His knuckles rolled along my jaw, shifting my focus back to his dark eyes. So beautiful, but not the ones I wanted to see, not staring at me like that. There was a moment where time stopped, and I caught my breath. Mistaking my reaction for something other than fear, he closed the distance between us and I pulled away.
We never mentioned it again.
It was the last night I spent alone with Jacob, back then, the way we were. Years have passed, but I'll never forget that moment we had on the rocks.

My first one shot. Please review! I have no idea if I'm good at this fanfiction thing.
