Last Thoughts of Rue

I lighted the first and second fire without any troubles. It was the third one that was when it happened.

I climb a tree that was next to the second fire. I reach for the branch on the other tree and I swing on to it. I repeat this until I find the clearing that leads to the third fire.

When I hope down, I hear the talking of the Careers and I hope they can't see me. Of course they can't, isn't that the point of our plan?

I walk about a yard and something entraps me. I try to get out, but whatever is holding me is keeping me down. It was a net.

"A trap," I whisper.

I can't get out, I need help or they will find me.

"Katniss!" I yell at the top of my lungs. "Katniss, help! Katniss! Katniss!"

I hear footsteps to my right and I see Katniss' dark hair. She uses her knife to free me and I stand up.

For a while we just stand there, but then I see a boy from 1, Marvel is his name. Katniss turns around and he launches a spear at us. Katniss shoots an arrow as the spear hits me.

Pain.

Horrible pain.

Blinding light.

I.

Am.

Falling.

Down.

Katniss catches me before I hit the ground.

"You're okay," she whispers, "You're okay, you're okay."

"Did you blow up the food?" I ask, coldness flooding through my body. I see red blood spill all over me. My head feels dizzy.

"Every bit of it."

I sigh with relief and a pain shoots through me, "Good." There was a horrible, painful silence. "You have to win."

I stare at the sky and the trees are moving. The light is too bright. "Can you sing?" I manage to get out.

Katniss agrees and starts to sing. I couldn't understand the words as the world is slipping from me. My eyes start to blur and I think of the last night that I've slept. I was huddling with Katniss after my first full belly. Now, I'll sleep forever. I remember my mom's face when she came and visited one last time. We didn't speak, we didn't need too. I will never hear the mocking jays sing, never hear my family's voice, never see Katniss, never walk the earth. Never again.

The world turns dark.
