A SECOND OF DEATH

Author's Note: Just my thoughts on what went through Sirius' head before he passed through the veil.

"'Come on, you can do better than that!' he yelled, his voice echoing around the cavernous room. The second jet of light hit him squarely on the chest."

The paralysis spread quickly, emanating outwards, like rays penetrating through a cloud of darkness. The damage had already been done, before he even realized what had happened.

His brain was numb and a swirl of thoughts simultaneously. His eyes were still locked on hers. But he was seeing beyond her. Through her. His past. His friends. His dreams...hopes…

There was no scream, no gasp of pain. Breathing and talking were not necessary.

It felt unreal. Incomprehensible. How can it be!

Just a day ago, he had been talking to Remus of the future, of what he planned to do. They had talked late into the night. Had spoken of the past, of James, had tried to glimpse the future, of Harry.

No it can't be!

He felt it. Death, creeping upon him like long fingers of ivy upon a wall. And for the first time in his life, he felt fear.

I'm dying. I'll never see Remus again. I'll never see Harry. I'm dying.

Had he not wished this upon himself…had he not wished it fifteen years ago…on that dark night.

But now he didn't want it.

He was engulfed by a muffled silence. Part of him still didn't believe it. A part of him knew it was the end. A part of him was already dead.

It had all taken a second. Yet it seemed so much longer. An age had passed.

And then he was no more.
