See, this, here – was all there was.
He knew that; he did.
Intellectually.
His heart didn't fucking understand.
In a year of darkness, his only light had come from a single source – his new family – Lisa and Ben.
Now that light had gone out, but instead of black he had grey. Twilight, half light, because Sam was not Sam any more. Not really.
Apparently this creature/person didn't even want to be Sam, not Dean's lost brother anyway. Maybe he'd go carve himself into a new Sam Winchester, but where did that leave Dean?
Watching, helpless, as his past walked away.
