Veronica Mars.

Months ago the name meant everything. Power, popularity, some lame freshman's gateway to the hottest parties in Neptune, California. Veronica was a 09'er by the connection, after all. She may have not been able to spend thousands of dollars on a car just because she can but if you were given the "Veronica Mark of Approval" which was never all that hard to get from innocent Princess V, you could finally call yourself important.

Now? Now it meant close to nothing. Suddenly, no one cared about what Veronica had to say. No one stood up for her. No one used her for anything more than a punching bag. It made sense, of course. She and the famous Lilly Kane were friends since they were kids and that was the only reason anyone ever gave her the time of the day, the reason why they wanted to be her. Because well, few wanted to be Lily Kane. They wanted to be friends with her. They wanted to be the one she told all her secrets, the one who got to see her sweet, sensitive side. Lily was perfect and they wanted to be her Veronica. All it took was her death, though, and a bit of misunderstanding for Veronica Mars to stop being envied. At least that's what everyone told themselves.

Because in the end, Lilly Kane loved three people most on the planet during her short life. Her brother, Duncan Kane, her on and off boyfriend, Logan Kane, and her best friend, the Veronica Mars. They were, the four of them, inseparable. Always off somewhere no one would find them, their cellphones turned off, without a care in the world except for each other.

At lunch they sat with 09'ers like Dick and Madison and Meg and they'd all laugh and joke and eat specially made pizza and cake with their names on it. But even the 09'ers knew they were on the outside looking in. It was impossible to miss their inside jokes, their glances, things they just refused to share with anyone who names weren't Logan, Lilly, Duncan and Veronica. That was just how it was.

And Lily and Veronica? Lily once told Veronica she'd love her the best if she'd love her best and the rest was history. At parties sometimes Lilly would decide to start a scene, pulling Veronica on top of the table with her as if they (she) weren't already the center of attention. They'd drink and dance and giggle and it was as if they world in their own world and they really were.

Everyone wanted to be a part of this little group, the fab four, and even more they wanted to be loved by Lilly but it just wasn't happening. No one could be this girl, Veronica Mars. This girl who didn't belong in Lily's world, who personalities seem to clash with her best friend's to everyone besides each other. Madison would bring it up sometimes. How did they become friends exactly? Veronica would roll her eyes. Lilly would flip her hair and smile. But they never answered. They hardly understood their friendship themselves. It didn't really matter. They just went together. Like chicken and waffles. Wrong but so right. Nothing could change that. Nothing did.

So everyone looked up to Lilly Kane. Worshiped her. It made them feel like they were a part of her world even when they were so far from it. But Lilly is gone now, and Veronica no longer mattered and so, despite the envy, they're satisfied.

When it all comes down to intentions though, Veronica only wanted justice for Lilly Kane, way, way more than they did, and Lilly would only love her even more for it. They hate Veronica Mars for being Lily's for so long, for being the only person who was ever really Lilly's. They hate her and they let her know it. As it is, they know if Lilly were alive she'd make them all suffer for it.
