The first time Janis kisses her she's crying.
It's their last day of high school ever and they're in her basement, a little buzzed, a little scared. Cady's leaning back on the couch, a wine cooler in one hand and Janis is beside her, watching her. Her head's on her hand, and she's leaning to the side, as if she's going to topple off the edge and spill onto the floor. Janis is watching her with eyes that just shine, and Cady feels like crying. There's a lump forming in her throat and she takes a swig to try and ease it away. When she looks back Janis hasn't moved, still watching her with her eyes glittering as if she wants to eat her alive.
She probably does.
Janis has always been an all or nothing girl, as dangerous as Regina, simply in a different way. It's like a pressure cooker in here and they're the only two left. Damian had to meet a guy, leaving his apology in the wine coolers exacerbating the heat. Kevin got a better offer, supposedly, a few weeks after he and Janis got together, although secretly Cady thinks she dumped him. Aaron left when Cady refused his dinner invitation.
He says Janis is tearing them apart, but Cady knows he was back between Regina's legs long before the air began to crackle between herself and Janis. He's only jealous he can't have it all and she's disappointed. She thought that she could have it all, but America's been one sharp learning curve. And Janis keeps throwing her curve balls.
Janis suddenly moves closer and Cady gasps. She's suddenly afraid and the fact that she doesn't know what of makes her want to break out into hysterical laughter. This is so real, compared to Aaron, compared to Regina and the plastics. This will have actual ramifications. The rest was child's play. Janis's mouth, a hairsbreadth away and so tempting, is the step between her childhood in Africa and the beginning of the rest of her life in America. But the rains follow her everywhere, the storm threatening to break either way. Janis is terrifyingly close, watching her with the intensity of a predator stalking it's prey. Cady closes the difference.
The first time Janis kisses her she's crying. Cady wants to be consumed.
