Abigail Novak never married.
She was, at one point, engaged, but then her brother disappeared and everything changed. She knew he was alive even when her sister-in-law, Amelia, called and said the police had found Jimmy's body. Abigail didn't care; she knew, in her soul, that her brother was alive.
Twins know things like that.
And Abigail knew where ever he was…he wasn't himself. For as long as she could remember the twins had had a special bond…9 months in a womb forces you to be close. The two always knew when the other got hurt, even before they saw the wound. It wasn't that Abigail felt her brother's pain, for that would be impossible, but it was as if his soul cried out and Abigail heard it.
From the moment he disappeared Jimmy's soul never stopped screaming.
Eventually, Abigail broke down. She'd long ago given up on the faith of her family, but she still found herself in a pew. Silence echoed through the grand halls as Abigail sent out her own silent cry.
If you're real help me find my brother.
"I know where your brother is," a voice whispered in Abigail's ears. She looked around furiously, but there was no one in sight. Still, she knew she'd heard something, someone.
"Who… who are you?" Abigail asked her voice hoarse from the tears that stained her face. "Where's my brother?"
Though Abigail couldn't see whoever was speaking, she felt her smile, "I am Hannah, an angel. You can't see me, but you can hear my voice. Your brother is, right now, in Lebanon, Kansas."
Abigail had never heard of the place, but she wanted to be there now. "Can you help me get there…wherever you are?"
"I am everywhere and nowhere at once," Hannah replied plainly. (As if that made any sense.) "And I can bring you to your brother, but there is something you must know. Your brother is currently the vessel to a very powerful angel, but he needs help. I cannot help him unless you allow me to possess you."
Possession? What was this a demon?
"Angel, not demon," Hannah replied as if reading Abigail's mind. (Which, if she was telling the truth, was probably the case.) "Though at one time the words were synonymous. I promise you, Abigail Novak, that if you say yes and let me in I will help your brother, and someday you both can be united."
Abigail understood that her brother was faced with this same choice, and that it lead to the unimaginable pain she'd felt. Still, Abigail needed to find her brother, help her brother. He was the only family she had left. "Okay," Abigail gulped. "Yes, take me to my brother."
"And you will take me to mine."
