His wife's blood drips off his hands onto his child's marred chest with the same frightening ferocity that his tears plummet from his eyes. Nick clutches her cross necklace in his right hand, the points drilling divots into his skin, and prays. He pleas to God to bring her back, and when God doesn't respond he invokes Gabriel, Michael, and when neither respond he falls to the ground, hands slipping across the blood-slick guard rail of his dead daughter's crib.
As he falls, boiling water envelops Jimmy Novak's hand, the muddy vegetables on the kitchen counter long forgotten. As he falls, Amelia Novak's smile slips away as her husband rants about angels. As he falls, God and the heavenly host bless a father with a live child and wife with an angel of his own, Castiel.
When Nick arises, the knees of his jeans are soaked in darkening red, and he goes to wipe the tears from his eyes only to coat his cheeks in blood. His mouth fills with two unfamiliar copper tangs as he opens it to breathe. He vomits in their bathroom. The taste never dissipates.
He drops her necklace into the toilet before calling the police.
