Author's Note:
I've come to a conclusion about souls in the Buffyverse. They have nothing to do with anything else. Not your heart, nor your head. A soul is just a soul and it doesn't do much at all. The whole Angel vs Angelus thing is all in his head.
(keep in mind: my opinion = you don't have to agree).
I was just thinking..what if Spike's brand spanking new tortured soul got in the way of his tried and true loving heart? It's not much just a train of thought..
-------------------------------------------
"Spike?...Are you real?"
She knew the answer though, those eyes, they were real. He was real. No spirit could do them justice, no mystical power could recreate that exact shade of blue..
But even though she knew without a doubt that this Spike was real, that this Spike was her Spike, she also felt that something was missing. The eyes, which normally told her everything, were flat and lifeless. They lacked the heat of passion, the sadness of longing, the spark of anger..
The eyes are the window to the soul, or so many say. Funny how she'd taken for granted all his eyes had told her and yet still called him a soulless monster. Funny how she had taken for granted that his eyes had been telling her all along that a soul wasn't that important.
Funny how she hadn't noticed.
Now here he was before her, eyes as barren as the icy tundra they mocked, and she realized how much comfort his eyes had given her. The eyes that never lied.
Well, those eyes were lying now, or at least not telling any truth. Buffy felt chilled to the bone. She loved him. Had even loved him long before he left without knowing it. But now, looking into those eyes, she felt something was missing. The "window's to his soul" were shut, but how could that be possible if he hadn't had a soul to begin with? He had his soul now, and yet his eyes didn't tell half the story they used to.
Looking into his eyes, Buffy saw that he had come back to her as less of a man than when he left. How can you lose what you never had? How can you be less than soulless? Maybe she had been wrong. Maybe the fact that he had been soulless hadn't been the real problem.
All he'd wanted was her love. He went through horrible trials just to get his soul. It was the only thing that could change her mind.
Funny that she'd loved him all along. Funny that the soul was what came between them.
End.
