You're Safe With Me
"Skylar! Help!"
Skylar Storm's superhero instincts kicked in as she heard a cry for help. She ran through the halls of Mighty Med, searching for anyone in need of help. Finally, she burst through the doors of the rec room. What she saw in there shocked her.
There were her two normo friends, Kaz and Oliver, strapped down to two gurneys. Her nemesis, the Annihilator, was standing right by them, power cannon in hand.
"Look who finally showed up." The supervillain taunted.
Skylar immediately got into a battle stance. "Let them go!"
"I'll let them go . . . if you give yourself up to me."
"No, Skylar! Don't do it! It's a trap!" Oliver exclaimed.
"Shut up!" The Annihilator yelled, pointing his power cannon threateningly at the normo. He then turned to look at Skylar. "Make your decision before I blast them to smithereens."
"Hey, uh, before you blast us to smithereens, can I take a bathroom break? I really gotta go." Kaz stated.
The Annihilator pointed his power cannon at Kaz. "I said shut up! No bathroom breaks!"
"Aw, man." Kaz groaned. "Oh well, this isn't the first pair of soiled underwear I've worn."
Skylar stared at her two normo friends and her nemesis. She had a choice – Kaz and Oliver or the Annihilator.
"Sorry guys, I have to do what's right." Skylar said as she began to walk toward the Annihilator. Kaz and Oliver looked at her in shock.
"Skylar! What are you doing?!" Oliver yelled. "Don't give yourself up! You can fight him!"
"She doesn't have her powers." Kaz pointed out.
"Kaz, shut up!" Oliver told his friend.
"Well, someone's in a grumpy mood." Kaz said, pouting.
Kaz and Oliver watched as Skylar kicked the Annihilator into the wall, causing him to drop the power cannon. She quickly grabbed the power cannon and activated it. Multi-colored rays of superhero powers shot out at the supervillain who fell to the ground.
"Yes! Skylar! You got it!" Oliver cheered.
Skylar pointed the power cannon at the Annihilator. "Now let my friends go!"
"You forgot I have one more trick up my sleeve." The Annihilator said, pulling out a familiar-looking ray gun.
Skylar gasped, dropping the power cannon. She stood frozen in fear as she stared at the weapon.
"You're on my side now." The Annihilator stated, activating the ray gun.
"Skylar! No!" Oliver exclaimed as he watched the superhero collapse to the ground after being hit with the ray gun.
"I hate to be a wet blanket, but I think that was the ray gun that turns a superhero evil." Kaz said.
"Really, Kaz?" Oliver looked at his friend, annoyed.
"What? I'm just pointing out a fact!"
"Well, maybe it didn't work." Oliver replied, a hopeful look on his face.
Suddenly, the pink streak in Skylar's hair turned white.
"Yeah . . . I'm going to say that it did work." Kaz stated.
Skylar stood up, an evil smirk on her face. She grabbed the power cannon off the floor and pointed it at Kaz and Oliver.
"She's not going to blast us with that, is she?" Kaz asked fearfully.
"I hope not. Maybe she's faking it. Skylar can't be evil again." Oliver replied, trying to remain positive even though he was terrified on the inside.
"What do you want me to do, Annihilator?" Skylar asked.
No one could see it, but the Annihilator was grinning. "Blast those two normos to smithereens."
"Yes, master." Skylar said.
Kaz began to panic. "She's not faking it! She's really evil! And she's going to blast us to smithereens!" He struggled to escape the restraints that held him down, but it was no use. "These restraints are too tight! I'm losing feeling in my arms!"
"Really?" Oliver asked. "That's what you're the most worried about right now? If we don't escape, we're going to end up feeling none of our body parts!"
Skylar held the power cannon up to the two normos and proceeded to load it with a certain superhero's powers – specifically Black Widower's poison power.
"Is she loading the Annihilator's power cannon with Black Widower's poison power?" Oliver asked.
"Yup, pretty much." Kaz responded.
"That's it! I'm not letting us die by the hands of the girl I secretly love! Skylar! Listen to me!" Oliver yelled. "It's Oliver! Your friend! You have to snap out of this! I know deep down you're not truly evil! You're a superhero! There has to still be some good in you! Please! Just try to fight it! For me!"
"Ahem!"
"And Kaz!"
Skylar paid no attention to Oliver's pleas. She finished loading the power cannon and pointed it directly at the two normos.
"Nice going, buddy. We're totally going to be saved!" Kaz remarked sarcastically.
"It doesn't matter. At least I'll die knowing I finally confessed my feelings." Oliver said. "Skylar, if you can hear me, I just want you to know that I've always loved you and I always will love you even though you're now evil and you're going to kill us."
"Nice last words. I'm going to die knowing I never got a bathroom break. Not that it matters. I already went." Kaz stated.
Oliver had a disgusted look on his face. "Okay, ew. Now I'm going to die with that image stuck in my head."
"Also, those aren't my last words. My last words are I love ramen!" Kaz yelled into the air.
"Really? Those are your last words?" Oliver asked.
"What? My mom's making ramen for dinner tonight, but I guess I won't be home for it, considering we're about to be blasted into smithereens and all." Kaz said.
Oliver sighed. "I just hope Skylar won't feel guilty and think this is her fault if she ever turns good again. I hope she'll be okay without us."
"Well, since she's the one blasting us to smithereens, I'm going to say she will be okay without us." Kaz replied.
Skylar got ready to launch the power cannon.
"Kaz, before we get blasted to smithereens, I just want you to know you're an awesome best friend." Oliver said.
"You too, man." Kaz sniffled. "You're the awesomest best friend I could ever have."
"Uh, awesomest isn't a real word. Also, are you crying, Kaz?" Oliver asked, noticing wet spots on his friend's cheeks.
Kaz was quick to deny. "No! I'm just sweating through my eyes!"
"Okay, well, it's good to know that you have feelings." Oliver said.
The two friends shut their eyes and waited for impact as Skylar activated the power cannon. Everything turned black and then . . .
"NO!"
Skylar woke up, hyperventilating. She looked at her surroundings to find she was in the rec room, but the Annihilator wasn't around. Neither were Kaz and Oliver. And she wasn't evil.
"Wait, double check!" Skylar searched for a mirror and sighed in relief when she found that the streak in her hair was not white, but pink like it has always been.
"It was just a dream." She said. "All a dream . . . well more like a nightmare."
Skylar immediately felt worried. What if her nightmare wasn't just a nightmare? What if it was a look into the future? What if the Annihilator captured her friends and turned her evil? What if she ended up killing her friends with Black Widower's poison power?
"Stop, Skylar!" The superhero told herself. "What occurred in my nightmare won't really occur in reality. What happened won't really happen . . . I hope."
Still, Skylar couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was going to happen and it had something to do with the Annihilator and her turning evil again.
It was late at night. Skylar knew everyone in Mighty Med was asleep by now. She really felt alone though and wished for some company to make her feel better.
"I think I know someone who will help me." Skylar said, reaching for her phone and dialing a number. She waited a few seconds before there was an answer.
"Hello?"
Skylar couldn't help, but have a smile cross her face once she heard the person's voice. "Oliver!"
"Oh, hi Skylar. What's up?"
"Um . . . I know it's really late and you're probably really tired or asleep right now, but I kinda had a nightmare and I feel kinda lonely and I kinda want some company. Do you kinda want to come over?" Skylar asked.
"You want me to come to Mighty Med?"
"Yes! We can, you know, chat and maybe watch a movie or eat popcorn or whatever normos do at a sleepover." Skylar suggested. She really hoped Oliver would say yes to the idea. She wasn't familiar with the concept of a sleepover, but she heard it was something fun that normos did really late at night and since she was now a normo, she wanted to try everything that normos did and learn more about them.
"A sleepover? That seems kinda girly."
Skylar frowned, disappointed. "Oh, okay, well, how about a slumber party? That's like a sleepover, but different, right?"
"Sure . . . you know what, Skylar, I'll come over. I always love to help a friend in need and you did say you needed help, right?"
Skylar bit her lip and she nervously twisted a strand of her hair around her finger. "Yeah . . . I did say that."
"Great! I'll be right over! See ya soon!"
An annoying sound came out of Skylar's phone and she removed it from her ear, realizing Oliver had hung up. She sighed as she dropped the phone and plopped back down on the couch she had fallen asleep on.
"I hope Oliver can help me. I feel so lost right now."
The entrance into Mighty Med slid open and in came Oliver with a variety of stuff in his arms. He was struggling to carry all the things and had almost dropped them twice during his trip to the superhero hospital.
"Skylar! I'm here!" Oliver called out, hoping the superhero would hear him.
"I'm in the rec room!"
Oliver sighed as he walked over to the hallway and into the doors that led into the rec room.
Skylar grinned once she caught sight of her friend. "Great! You're here! What's all this?" She asked, noticing the stuff in his arms.
"They're for our sleepover. I've got a bowl of popcorn, a pint of cookie dough ice cream, a bunch of movies, and tissues in case you sneeze from too much dust in your nose."
Skylar clapped her hands excitedly. "Oliver, you're the best! I can't believe you were willing to come over here and do all this for me!"
Oliver smiled. "Well, you are my friend."
"So, shall we start our sleepover?" Skylar asked.
Oliver nodded. "Sure, just let me unload. I would've brought all of this stuff in my mom's flower-printed suitcase, but I couldn't find it. Also, you would not believe what I had to get through to come here, but it was all worth it for you."
"Aw, that's sweet. Come on, we can sit on the couch and watch a movie!" Skylar skipped over to the couch and sat down while Oliver set all the stuff in his arms down on the table.
"I hope you like old black and white movies because that's all I could find on such short notice." Oliver stated.
Skylar shrugged. "Fine by me. I don't like the colorful stuff anyways. It's too distracting."
Oliver laughed. "Okay, I'll put the movie in." He picked out a movie and proceeded to put it in. He then joined Skylar on the couch as the movie began to play.
Skylar snuggled up closer to Oliver while he put his arm around her. She made no reaction to the gesture as she was too entranced in the movie to notice.
Two yawns and an empty bowl of popcorn later, the movie finally ended. As the credits rolled, Oliver turned to look at Skylar.
"So, what did you think?" He asked.
"Great, although I don't know why those townspeople kept chasing that monster with pitchforks and torches. He seems like such a nice guy! I'd befriend him right away!" Skylar replied.
"Yes, well, that's why they call him Frankenstein. He's supposed to be scary." Oliver said.
"He's not scary to me. Just misunderstood. All he needs is a friend to talk to."
"That would be kinda hard since all he does is mumble like this." Oliver did an impression of Frankenstein.
Skylar laughed. "That's funny."
"So, what do you want to do next? I didn't bring any board games, but maybe there's a deck of cards somewhere around here. We could play Solitaire!" Oliver looked around, trying to spot a deck of cards.
Skylar held up her phone. "On our phones?"
Oliver nodded. "Right . . . totally forgot about that." He reached into his pocket, but realized there was no phone there. "Oh well. Guess I forgot my phone too."
"That's alright. There's actually something else I wanted to do."
"Really? What?"
"Talk . . . about that nightmare I had."
Oliver frowned. "You had a nightmare? Is that why you called me over?"
"Yes, I explained it to you on the phone. Were you not listening?" Skylar asked.
"I was, but I was so tired and half-conscious and what were we talking about again?"
"Anyways," Skylar said. "I had a nightmare about the Annihilator turning me evil again."
"Skylar, the Annihilator is gone. There's no way he can turn you evil again." Oliver told her.
"I know, but . . . after he turned me evil again, I had his power cannon and I loaded it with Black Widower's poison power and then . . . I killed you and Kaz with it."
"Skylar . . ."
"What if it wasn't a nightmare, but the future? What if that actually happens?" Skylar asked. "I'm worried, Oliver. I don't want to become a supervillain again. I don't want to be evil."
"Skylar, I assure you, it was nothing, but a horrible nightmare. You're a superhero. You save people and I know you're good at heart. You always have been and always will be. No supervillain can change that about you."
Skylar smiled. "Thanks, Oliver. I'm so happy I have a friend like you to talk to about this."
"Yeah, me too." Oliver said.
"The Annihilator won't get to me again, right?"
Oliver pulled Skylar into a hug. "Right. You're safe with me, Skylar. I will protect you and with me around, no supervillain can get to you ever again. I promise."
Skylar smiled, feeling completely safe in Oliver's arms. That's when she realized she had a feeling she never felt before. A feeling most normos felt when they really liked someone.
Skylar pulled away and stared at Oliver, who had a concerned look on his face.
"Skylar, what's wrong?"
"Oliver, I think I might actually-"
Suddenly, the doors into the rec room burst open and in came Kaz, looking upset. "Seriously? You have a sleepover and you didn't invite me? Rude!"
Skylar bit her lip and quickly grabbed the pint of cookie dough ice cream. "I'll be in the hallway." She stated, making a hasty exit.
Oliver reached his arm out for the superhero. "Wait! Skylar! What were you going to say?!"
Kaz looked at where Skylar had just left and then back at his friend. "Did I interrupt something?"
Oliver shook his head. "No, no you did not."
Kaz grinned. "Oh, good, because if I did, you probably would be really mad at me. Hey, you didn't start the pillow fight without me, did you?"
Oliver grabbed a pillow and repeatedly hit Kaz with it, who put his hands up in defense. "Hey! Ow! It was just a question! Stop hitting me with a pillow!"
"Stop interrupting my moments with Skylar!"
"Oh, so I did interrupt something! Why didn't you tell me?"
"I just did!"
Meanwhile, outside of the rec room, Skylar was sitting in a corner, quietly eating ice cream while thoughts of a certain normo went through her head.
"I know I like Oliver, I just don't know how to tell him."
