Secret of His Own
Disclaimer: I no own. Read Manhunter
Timeline: Sometime during early 52.
Damon Matthews was on a redeye flight to New York. Kate said she would cover for him since he's covered for her so many times.
He doesn't care what everyone else says, she is not a cold hearted bitch. She's the best friend he's ever had in his life.
Todd left to see his father and mourn his sister. His superhero father. His golden age super hero father who was rumored to be the biggest fuddy-duddy out of all the JSA.
Todd left a message on his answering machine: "Damon I'm going (sob) to New York. I'm so, so, (sob) sorry I didn't tell you (sob) the whole truth. I'm sorry. (sob) Good-Bye.
That "good-bye" sounded a lot like "I'm breaking up with you because I don't think you want me anymore" good-bye, not "I'll catch up with you later" good-bye.
Well, he still wanted Todd. Todd needed his support more then ever now that his sister had died.
Sisters. Damon tried to shake away thoughts of Anne. Anne had almost disowned him when he left the Mormon church, and actually disowned him when he came out of the closet.
He hated to admit it, but the revelation that Todd was a super-hero with some dark secrets scared him shitless.
It wasn't just the presence of the secrets themselves, but it was the fact that since Todd's secrets had come out (so to speak), he, Damon Matthews would have to reveal his own secrets.
Like Andy, the nice kitten-lover vegan who left bruises on his face before and after the restraining order, or Owen, the blind date who later become a super-villain, or the biggest one of all...Damon Ishmael Matthews, a boy stuck in an a severely dysfunctional Mormon family who dreamed of Hawkman somehow rescuing him, but it was his aunt and uncle who turned out the be the super heroes in his life.
"Sir, are you are having a medical emergency? You're gripping the armrests rather tightly!" the flight attendant asked.
"Oh, no, no, just jogging down nostalgia lane. Could I get another club soda?"
Damn it, this was no time for angsty self-absorption. Todd needed his support and needed it now!
