Marvelopolis: Peter Meets Loki
Peter stood at the front of the lunch room, tray in hands, and looked out into the sea of eating and laughing students. This school sure was clique-y. They even had names for their cliques too. Peter was pretty sure he did not belong in the X-men, he was not a mutant. The Fantastic Four was out, he would make five. The Avengers, too, seemed unlikely; they were mostly comprised of football players. It was then he saw, way in the back of the cafeteria, sitting all alone, reading a book, a dark-haired boy he saw in his advanced mathematics class. The boy was lean, pale, and wearing mostly green and black. Peter had heard him be called Loki, and already knew somewhat of his trickster reputation. It was worth a shot, what had he to lose?
Peter crossed the cafeteria, put his tray down, and sat across from his classmate. Loki did not even look up; he seemed to be very engrossed in his book. This would take effort.
"Ahem," said Peter, not too loudly.
Loki paid him no attention.
"Ahem," he said again, a little louder, and gave Loki a little nudge.
"What?" Loki asked, looking up. He was obviously annoyed.
"Um, hi," Peter was not quite sure how to go about this. "I'm Peter Parker."
"I know." And he went back to his book.
Maybe this was not worth it. Maybe this Loki character was just mean. Maybe he would have to try his luck with the Fantastic Four. Five could work, five started with an 'F'. The group would have to stop there, though. The Fantastic Six sounded terrible. Suddenly Peter's thoughts of making friends were interrupted with a sigh.
"I suppose you should know that I'm Loki, if you're just going to sit there."
"Oh, uh, I know."
Loki smirked and went back to his book again.
"What are you reading?"
"A book."
Well. Peter leaned in closer, trying to see the pages. It looked old. Loki snapped the book shut.
"You lost your page." Peter pointed out.
"I'll find it. Why don't you just go spin yourself a nice web somewhere, okay?"
Peter was shocked. He knew. Did he know? He couldn't. How could he know? "S-s-spin a web? What a weird thing to say. You're weird, you know that? How would I spin a web?"
"Oh please. This is a fictional school based off a series of superhero comic books written by a teen fan girl. You go by the name Parker, you're on roll for a scientific scholarship, you come from New York City, and you expect me to believe you don't have spider powers?"
"Shhh! Does everybody know?" Peter whispered back.
"No. They're all too stupid."
There was an awkward silence. At least Peter thought it was awkward, Loki went back to his book. That boy sure was… questionable. And what was that about fiction? And superheroes? And fangirls? Pete was not sure he wanted to know more. Spiderman though he was, a new school was hard enough to deal with for now. And Loki, were they friends now? Could they be? Well, he will probably find out soon enough. The bell rang. Useless being late for class, but Loki was still reading his book.
"Loki, the bell rang, we have to go."
Loki still did not look up, did not acknowledge him. Suddenly, there was a crack and a puff of green smoke and Loki was gone. Teleported. Yes, thought Spiderman, this would take some getting used to.
