"I can't stand her. She's like some kind of parasite," Margo Sumner said, glaring at Dr. Ramanujan through binoculars. The dark-haired professor strode briskly up a sidewalk. There wasn't a doubt in Margo's mind where the woman was heading.
Not that it mattered. Charlie wasn't going to be there. He wasn't at his office or in a classroom. He was in the woods—on one of CalSci's hiking trails that he frequented. Margo knew because she'd just left from watching him there. She loved watching Charlie so much. Sometimes she spent hours just memorizing every detail about him, from the way he appeared to the way he moved. She burned to be in his company, to be close to him.
Charlie shared his math with everyone. He shared himself with only a few.
Margo craved to have all of him.
"She's always with him. I don't know why he lets her hang around," Margo complained. "Almost every time I've seen them together she's left him with a guilt trip or feeling bad about something. I can see it in his eyes. She hurts him, but he puts up with her anyway."
Jacob Minor uncoiled his double cheeseburger from its foil wrapper. He balled up the trash and tossed it aside before taking a big bite of his food. He spoke with his mouth full, spitting flecks of meat and lettuce with every word.
"I can snipe her, if you want," he offered through chews. "Who cares if she's a bitch? With legs like that you know your pretty boy professor's screwin' her anyway. That's probably why she's in such a hurry. They got some complex math to do. Are you positive you don't want me to take out the competition?"
Margo wanted to slap the grin right off his fat face. "She's a nobody! She's pushy is what she is. And Charlie's just too sweet to tell her to leave him alone."
Margo reached into her jean's pocket and pulled out her lighter. She stared at it intently. "Sometimes I dream about setting her hair on fire, about her screaming. That's the only way it should be done. She's not worth a bullet."
"All right, all right," Jacob said, eyeing her as he picked his teeth. "She'll be out of the picture soon enough. Out of sight, out of mind, right?"
"Right." Margo nodded. "I'll make him so happy he'll forget all about her. Someday—Someday I want us to walk right past her like she's not even there. I want her to call Charlie's name, and for him to look at her like he's never seen her before."
"Speaking from experience, Sweetheart?" Jacob asked.
Margo scowled in response. "The only reason he doesn't notice me is because she's always talking so loud. How can he not listen to her? He'll see. He'll understand. I'm much smarter than Dr. Ramanujan. He won't have to dumb things down to talk me."
Margo shivered with excitement, both for herself and for Charlie. After today, he wouldn't have to pretend to like Amita Ramanujan.
Just a few more hours, Charlie.
Charmita: I hope that's what you were thinking of. Hopefully Margo's "dream" about Amita will never come true… =)
Also, I am a huge Amita fan. These are the characters talking—not me!
I might add to this later and flesh it out a bit more.
