"I still can't believe you managed to pull this off," said Sydney, slightly in wonder. Here they were, in the Ivashkinator, with nothing but road ahead and desert behind them. Summer was ending, even if it was impossible to tell by the way the heat hung around Southern California, and Adrian managed to convince Zoe that he needed Sydney to take him out to some made up place for a thousand reasons. She glanced at her boyfriend through the corner of her eye and smiled. They would get to have one last summer trip as a couple after all.

"You'd be surprised what people will agree to when they want you to shut up. The key is to be unyielding," Adrian paused, "And incredibly attractive." Sydney rolled her eyes and smiled, despite herself. The setting sun painted the sky in oranges and purples, yet she only kept her eyes on the road, her mind occupied with the joy of driving. She loved the sound of the mustang's engine, the feel of shifting gears, and the texture of the highway beneath her. She was so engrossed in the action until she felt Adrian's hand settle on top of hers. It was a light touch, as to not impair her shifting, but it was distracting. Even now, after everything, she felt her skin ignite where he touched her. Hell, she still got butterflies when he smiled at her. Did he feel the same? Did holding hands still excite him like it did her? When she ran her fingers down the contours of his back did he— driving. Focus.

"So are you going to drive until we run out of gas, or do we have a destination?" Adrian asked.

"I thought you were the one who had some place you so desperately needed to be."

"I'm already there," he said softly, and Sydney felt her heart melt a little. He squeezed her hand before removing it. She missed it immediately. They drove in comfortable silence, just happy to be alone together. Eventually, Sydney exited from the freeway and continued on side roads. They bounced ideas off of each other, wondering what they should do. Maybe coffee or dinner, or sweets if Adrian had his way. They hit a red light, so Sydney turned to Adrian to offer her next suggestion and found herself inches away from his face. He was leaned over the stick shift, and their eyes locked for a moment. Was it his desire she saw or her own reflected in his eyes? She closed the distance for their lips to meet, and heat spread throughout her body. No matter how many times they did this, Sydney still felt fire burn through her. Adrian reached an arm up to cup her face and tilt it for better access to her mouth, but she surprised him this time. She sucked his bottom lip, and he shivered. They needed to be closer. She wanted to run her hands all over him, to feel his body pressing into hers. There were too many seat belts in the way.

Horns honking broke their moment, but the tension in the car was still high.

Maybe they'd find a place to park.

Yeah. That sounded good.
