Chapter 1:

Rain fell from the dark sky, and thick trails of steam worked from their lips into the air. They eyed each other across the vacant lot, lightning tearing the sky and silence asunder.

"So…" said the first with a smirk "Are we going to dance or just make eyes at each other all night?"

The response of the second was the hurl itself towards the first with a howl of rage, razor sharp claws extended, slicing through the air at the first's chest, spittle flying from it's mouth in anger. The creature's talons connected to something solid, and a satisfying wet splattering sound was heard as it shredded the object to pieces.

"Bang."

An explosion of blue-white light tore the night as the former Spirit Detective Yusuke Urameshi unleashed his seldom used Spirit Gun at point blank range to the back of the carrion demon's head. A fine red mist showered the air, mixing with the rain.

-----------------------------

It had been 5 years since he had returned to the Human World. 5 years of happiness and bliss with his wife, Keiko. He even had a steady job at a construction yard, and a kid. Him! A kid! What were the odds! On his weekends he went to Kuwabara's gym to keep in shape and box with the red headed idiot. What were the odds that on his way back from one such night, he'd run into a feral demon, snacking on what used to be a jogger?

The odds were bad. And so were the implications. Since the Demon World Tournament, he hadn't had anything to do with the place, demons (with the noted exceptions of Kuwabara's girlfriend Yukina, the one and only Kurama, and even an occasional visit from Hiei), hell, he hadn't even seen that stupid pacifier sucking kid or Botan in a few years.

Without realizing it, he had arrived at his home. He sighed, he knew Keiko would be angry at him for not calling about being late. He knew that she'd be even angrier if she knew he'd been fighting demons again. Finally, he knew that it didn't matter how angry she was; she didn't have anything to worry about.

He opened the door, and immediately regretted doing so.

His night had just gotten a hell of a lot worse.
