Truth or Dare
"Fiona, wait," Adam whispers as he grabs my hand when I begin walking away. I turn back to him, raising my eyebrows. "Truth or dare?"
I blink once, slowly pulling my hand out of his. Even as a child, I always hated this game. I knew Adam wouldn't dare me to do something embarrassing but if he found out the truth, everything would change. The way he looks at me, the way he touches me. He already treats me as if I'm made of glass. What would happen if he found out how I really am? If he found out how broken I am, full of cracks and chips that can never be filled.
He couldn't find out. Not like this.
"You first," I challenge.
He bites down on his lip, looking down for a moment before meeting my eyes again. "Ok. Truth."
"What's something about you no one else knows?"
A ghost of a smile creeps onto his lips. He looks almost relieved, but somehow sad at the same time. "No one?"
"No one."
"I uh... I used to feed my vegetables to the dog when I was a kid."
I laugh. Typical Adam. "So that explains why you're so scrawny, huh?" I touch his chest, but he moves away and stumbles backwards.
He clears his throat as he shakes his head. "Yeah, I guess," he stammers. "Truth or dare?"
I sigh. I should have known he wouldn't let me off that easy. "Truth." I don't breathe for a moment, waiting to hear his question, preparing myself for the worst.
He looks down again and releases a slow breath, nervously kicking the floor with the toe of his shoe. "What would you do if I said I want to kiss you?" he asks slowly.
I smile and take a step toward him, but stop just short of making physical contact with him. "Truth or dare?"
He quickly looks down. "Right," he mumbles. He nods before meeting my eyes again. "Dare," he whispers, with a tiny shrug.
"Kiss me."
The End
