AN: Hey, guys! So this is the story of Dawnkit and her death, which I've created for a challenge, but also for your enjoyment! Please, feel free to leave reviews! c:
The light began to fade out of the young molly's blue eyes, the pain pouring out of her belly being too much for her. She looked down, and was rewarded with a blurry view of only red. She winced at the motion, not wanting to move anymore, not even wanting to breathe. Oh, Starclan, let me die quickly! Dawnkit begged, looking back up at the sky. Her fur was ruffled and stuck to her pelt, the result of both her lack of food and her loss of blood.
A face crouched before her. Mom. She came… even after what I had done. The young kit forced a smile, wanting her mother to see her love when she could not feel it anymore. "Oh, my kit! My precious kit!" Dawnkit's mother began licking her daughter's pelt rapidly before realizing that nothing could be done. Still, she stayed, and reached, trying to pick Dawnkit up one last time. The dying she-cat yelped with pain as she was lifted slightly.
"Frostcloud! Stop! You'll make her suffer…" Dawnkit's father, Redwhisker, gently forced his mate aside, and Dawnkit was placed on the ground, yelping once more.
"Momma, it hurts!" she uttered, her voice hoarse and quiet. Her body was on fire, and she felt as though she might just freeze, all at once.
"I know, Honey. But we promise, it'll be over soon…" her mother's eyes were filled with sorrow, and she struggled to continue, "eat this. It'll make you feel better." Frostcloud swallowed her pain as she revealed a small crimson berry.
Dawnkit did not recognize what was in front of her, and she didn't care. She lapped up the bitter herb and waited for peace, for relaxation.
It did not come.
She jerked as the berry took full effect, and died, nearly instantly.
"Why!? Why couldn't I have been watching her better? The monster…. It had no mercy…" Dawnkit's mother broke into sobs, mourning over what she had lost.
"It wasn't your fault, Darling… It- It wasn't your fault…" Redwhisker repeated this phrase until dawn came, painfully reminding them again of previous events. And still, they held one another, watching as the sky lit up with red, orange, and grey, both hoping that their daughter had made it to Starclan.
Little did they know that Dawnkit had been watching them, her pain merely a forgotten memory. She sighed as she saw them grieve, and looked at the cat beside her. "Why do they cry for me? Don't they know that I will see them again soon?" Her wide eyes started to drift up as a blue molly appeared, her voice kind and soothing.
"They will understand someday, Dawnkit. But until then, we must watch over them, just as I watched over you."
"If you were watching me then… why did I die?" Confusion clouded the kit's vision, her innocence still evident after death.
"You sent them on a journey you will have to see to believe," she let out a light laugh, "besides, child, you belong here. Come," the she-cat flicked her tail, rising and wanting to take the kit from such a horrible scene, "I have much to show you."
Dawnkit followed joyfully, her tail waving in the air as she left. Her young mind drifted, filled with silly thoughts. Maybe death isn't so bad after all, she concluded.
