Chapter 1: The Drop from the Surface
~ Johnny's POV ~
"Ha! I TOLD you my kite is better! It's soaring WAY higher than yours!" one of my best friends, Ian, taunted.
"No way!" I protested, releasing more of the kite strings. "Mine's SO much higher than yours! Stop deceiving yourself, it's not working!" In no way was I going to lose to him!
My two best friends, Ian and Daniel, were joining my parents, my five-year-old sister and me for a picnic lunch. Daniel, being the goody-two-shoes he was, helped my sister and parents to set up the picnic.
I know it was irresponsible of Ian and me to run off and play, but come on! We're boys! Reckless and impulsive. We could not do the petty little things we deemed unimportant.
Not looking where I was going, I trampled on what seemed like a normal turf of grass, but what I found out two seconds later to be a trapdoor of some sort. I plunged into darkness, and in fright, I released my kite strings. I tried to scream for help, but my voice was caught in my parched throat. Nothing was able to escape from the prison of my white lips. I was too much in shock.
I forced myself to look up. The trapdoor was closing in on me. I was in hysterics. "Help!" I thought desperately. The last thing I remember before my mind shut down was squeezing my eyes, bracing myself for impact.
~ 3rd Person's POV ~
She saw her brother fall. She saw, yet she did nothing. She did not cry out. She did not alert her parents. She simply did not care. Her brother always ignored her anyway. It would not be any different with him gone. Vanished from the face of the Earth.
She turned to her mother. "Momma, can we have lunch now?"
