As he walked back into the prison from taking watch Daryl suddenly found himself outside Carol's cell, just as he had the night before. He didn't understand it but as he watched her sleeping a sense of relief washed over him. She looked so peaceful, as though her life had been untouched by the darkness he knew it had. Since he had found her a few days ago he had been watching her almost constantly checking that she was still there and that she was unharmed. Over the winter they had grown close and they were comfortable around one another despite their past experiences, he didn't know if it was because they understood one another or if it was an entirely different reason. As Carol sighed and turned on to her side in her sleep he held his breath, ready to run back to his perch if she woke up. He started thinking back to the winter when he helped Carol learn to defend herself, he felt proud at how much she had changed since they had left the farm; she could hold her own now and was a reliable shot, she was more than just the housewife of the group, she could protect them as well. "Daryl?" He was startled from his thoughts by her voice and was unsure whether to leave or answer her, either way she would know he had been watching her sleep.
