James Potter was a complicated bloke – or so he seemed to Lily Evans. She could never quite figure him out; even years after the two had left Hogwarts. When they were younger, he seemed to always have constant mood swings – one minute he adored her, the next he despised her.
James would hex students (mainly Slytherins) that annoyed him into oblivion, but everyone always talked about how kind-hearted he was – especially to his friends.
And not to mention the boy would ask the poor girl out at least once a week during their fifth year. No matter how many times she clearly said 'No', he kept at it.
At the beginning of sixth year, Lily concluded that she would never understand James Potter, that he would always be more horrible than kind. The shock that ensued after Christmas break of their sixth year, however, completely changed the young witches mind. James Potter acted like a civil, kind and polite human being to everyone (well, to the 'Marauders', Severus Snape didn't count). He even gave Lily friendly grins when they passed in the corridors, instead of the usual smirk. Because of this change in attitude, it was no wonder to anyone really, when the boy was appointed Head Boy right alongside Lily.
Therefore, it didn't surprise Lily in the slightest when, one day after Transfiguration in their seventh year, after James Potter asked her to Hogsmeade, she found herself accepting without hesitation.
Yes, to Lily Evans, James Potter was a great mystery. But he was a mystery she wanted to solve.
