She's having nightmares again.
Sometimes, she dreams of imaginary siblings that don't exist, murdered because of her. It's not real, she knows, but still, she can't help but think that it happened, that it's not a dream.
So in the middle of the night, she wakes up and calls him, sobbing to him about things that never happened. She wails and cries about the blood spilled, and how happy they looked covered in red.
He listens quietly on the other end of the line, putting in a word or two of comfort here and there as she breaks down and mourns the deaths of these angels in her mind.
I can't believe they were smiling, smiling at me, even after I let them down! And they were dead! Because of me! she moans, her voice hoarse. Can…can you believe how they can still— She doesn't finish her sentence because she's sobbing again.
He can't find the words to speak, in all honesty, because it's just making his head spin. He hushes her softly, tells her everything's alright, but he knows it's a lie.
It's his first nightmare in awhile.
He's had them before, but he never tells anyone. Once, when he was staying in a dorm with a friend during his university days, the cat's almost out of the bag but he fibs, says something about a rhinoceros breaking into their dorm. His friend believes him.
When she notices the dark rings below his eyes, she immediately feels guilty, thinking that it's because of her, but he tells her otherwise, and she wants him to prove it. He gulps, because he doesn't know if he should say.
Eventually, he does.
I-in my dream, I—I had a brother, and he—he died one day, and w-we were the sons of this famous potter. My otou-chan — i-in this dream — he, he made me pretend t-that I was the one w-who died. M-my life, it—it wasn't real!
He feels pathetic, but he could care less as she thinks silently over the phone and whispers the same promises he makes to her every time she calls.
The first time they met, it's strange.
It's as if they've seen each other before, known each other in another lifetime. Something about the other person just intrigues them and before they know it, a friendship is formed. They share moments of laughter and joy and everything that hides the pain away, but they both know there's more than meets the eye.
Sometimes, they both wonder where they've seen each other before.
