One of them had to break this cycle.

They were all false smiles now:
distant, laced with jealousy
and success and failure
and a friendship they'd really thought they'd had

And yet here she was, drunk on her friend's success
and her own bitterness
and that bitterness came back tenfold
with venomous, equally anonymous replies.

Cowards: the both of them,
but she was the lesser one: no need to walk on success –
but there's that dark whisper telling her she'd better hurry up
and break that cycle, otherwise something more valuable
than friendship would be lost.
