Summary: Mina's husband, Heero, died unexpectedly a year ago; and unknowingly to the rest of the world, she still calls his cell phone, to hear his voice. What she doesn't expect his for him to one day answer back.
Author's notes: Okay, it's going to be kind of depressing, I'm hoping to at least get one or two people to feel some sort of emotion from this story. Maybe I'm asking too much. But here it goes.
Static
Mina smiled, dialing her husbands cell phone number into the number pad on their home phone. She waited after a few rings, then hearing his answering machine voice come up: I'm obviously not here, leave a name, number, message.
Mina frowned, looking at the clock and wondering why he still wasn't home. Maybe he had gotten carried away at work? Or he was in traffic and had turned his phone off? The thoughts didn't calm her, because she knew those weren't reasons. Heero had gone to America for business; he was coming home today. Or he was supposed to.
Mina was never a fingernail biter, but she had nothing else to resort to. As she gnawed on her nails, she tried calling again... The same thing happened.
Had the plane crash? Was something going on in America? She should have gone with him. Had she gone with him she wouldn't be going through this pain. He told her not to though.
She pressed her hand to her cheek, she was as cold as ice and there were warm tears running down her cheek. She turned on the television, looking at the news.
"In other news, today a plane crashed. It was destructive. The man who had tried to stop the crash from happening, and would have succeeded had it not been for the major loss of altitude, crawled out of the plane mumbling the words 'I'm sorry Mina.'"
Mina looked at the television in absolute horror. There was a picture of Heero on the screen. The worst had come, and now Mina was left with their home on the water and pictures of what once was.
--One Year Later--
Mina looked at the bill on the table for Heero's cell phone. Was she ever going to cancel it? No, probably not. This was insane, but she wasn't ready for him to die when he did. No one was. The funeral was horrible, she couldn't stop crying. She had been the definition of someone who lost their only connection to happiness.
She wrote a check for the bill, sighing. Mina then got up from the kitchen table where her and Heero had spent so many nights either arguing about something, then making up later on; or just talking.
She had loved him with all she was worth. Was it so wrong to be as sad as she was? Was it so bad that she got a pang of love upon hearing his short, direct message? To Mina, there was nothing more right.
She walked out the back door and onto the porch. It was a gorgeous day outside. She dialed the number that had been memorized from dialing it so much. She waited and after the third ring she got something unexpected.
The answering of her deceased husband.
"Hello?" Said the voice through a massive amount of static.
"Heero! Is that you? Is it really truly you?" She shouted, trying to scream over the static.
"Mina... love you... sorry... tried..." He said back. Static had taken out some words, but she understood him perfectly. He loved her, he was sorry for dying, and he tried to save all of the people.
"Heero, I love you too, I miss you, I need you here."
"Destiny... I'll be waiting for you. Forever. Until the day I'm allowed to tell you I love you with all my heart in person." The static had left for a moment and Mina was engulfed by a warm feeling that shot throughout her body.
"I don't want you to wait forever, don't do this. Please." She was going crazy. Her mind was thinking everything at once.
"Bye Mina."
...And then there was static.
