Chapter 1: Coverletter
Over the past few years- and these, of all my years, have been some of the roughest- it has become evident to me that stories are important. Though I am a firm believer that experiences, as well as those with whom you share them, form a person, I am not unreasonable. Now more than ever I see that life is short and time is wasted. I will never train dragons or travel the world by hot-air balloon, and that is fine. I have, however, heard the stories of those who have done these amazing things. These stories have become part of me.
We are on the verge of war, dear reader, and war brings about more stories than any other event. Love stories, stories of heroism, stories of families and those of terrible deeds surround me now, difficult to follow, intertwined. The only story I can ever know fully is my own, and it is all this poor man has to offer, as my life is already promised to my wife and a boy- no, a great, albeit young man whose name I'm sure you will be familiar with, no matter the outcome of this war: Harry Potter.
And on the subject of Harry, think of his story. The son of my two closest friends, he was born into a dangerous world of which he was the center. I believe you know the rest. Actually, you should know more than I do. I have resigned myself to the fact that I may never know the ending, though I will do my best to make sure it is a good one.
So I give you my story. I give you all of it, as truthfully and loyally as I can. And, though my teaching career ended years prior to my writing this, I cannot help my instinct to teach. I ask that you never forbid your instinct to learn. If this wasn't enough, I must now ask a large favor of you.
I am giving this... manuscript (I cannot find a word to accurately describe it) to someone I trust dearly, but, in war, choas is rampant. Should you stumble upon this, please deliver it to whom it was intended.
If he is alive, deliver this package of letters, my stories, my life to Theodore Lupin, my son.
Thank you,
Remus Lupin
A/N: This is a short chapter, but I just wanted to give it a little introduction. I'm looking forward to writing this. Let me know what you think of the idea!
