liar, liar
Shizuka knows Amane Bakura is a liar.
She has known this since they were both very small, when the pale-haired girl stole her favorite doll and then blamed Katsuya for it. It was very obviously not the truth—she knew her big brother would never do something like that—but Amane wasn't even trying to be subtle. She winked at the younger girl behind Katsuya's back and never brought it up again.
The habit never stopped. Not when they were in grade school and Amane copied her answers straight out of the textbook. Not when they were in middle school and Shizuka watched her best friend tell three different boys in their class that she loved them, just because this one owned a new video game or that one knew how to get free cookies on Mondays. Not now, when they are in high school and Shizuka's lost count of how many tests Amane has cheated on.
Not even this very minute, when hushed kisses and gentle touches should leave no room for lying yet Amane manages it anyway.
"I love you," she whispers when they break apart, blue eyes glimmering dark as they meet hazel ones.
Shizuka's never been a very brazen girl, never one to make the first move. She still finds herself leaning forward to capture the other girl's lips again, fiercely, if only to shut her up and keep her from saying anything else untrue and hurtful. Amane responds in kind and the falsehoods stop, if only for a short time.
Later, when they are both thinking straight again, Amane rolls over and breaks the silence.
"Don't tell anyone," she murmurs, looking Shizuka in the eye again. It seems that this little ritual is the only time she's serious about anything. "Okay?"
Shizuka swallows hard and tucks a strand of white hair behind Amane's ear.
"I won't tell anybody," she promises. As she always does.
Then, almost wistfully: "I love you too."
Amane smiles and tilts over to whisper in her ear.
"Good."
And then she giggles and kisses her companion's cheek, smiling because she knows she's safe.
Because Amane is a liar, but Shizuka always tells the truth.
