2006
Edward and I were lying on my bed.
It was late at night, and Charlie was already asleep. A question had
been stirring in my mind all day, but I was afraid to ask it.
Finally, I summed up all of my courage and turned to him. "Edward?"
I asked softly. He smiled at me.
"Yes?"
"Was there any
particular reason that you took a break from vegetarianism in the
thirties?" I inquired cautiously. He sighed.

Carlisle came through the front
door, holding the newspaper and shaking his head. Edward glanced at
him from where he sat in his armchair. "Bad news, Edward," said
Carlisle, handing him the paper. The headline "BLACK TUESDAY" was
in bold letters at the top of the first page. "Your Model T is
being repossessed," said Carlisle apologetically.
"Why?" he
asked morosely.
"Remember all of that money you invested in the
stock market?" He nodded. "The stocks crashed. We're broke."
Carlisle was running his hands through his hair nervously, worried
that he would lose his job. Edward jumped up, heading for the door.
"Where are you going?" questioned Carlisle.
"Out," he
grumbled furiously.

"Oh, you know," said Edward lightly, "Everybody cracks one time or another."
