A/N: Well, last night I was thinking of all the 'neglected' pairs in Redwall. You know: Matthias and Cornflower; Mattimeo and Tess; Tammo and Pasque; Dotti/?; Gonff and Columbine; Grath/Inbar; Rosie/Tarquin; Luke/Sayna; Broggle/Fwirl (all right, so Taggerung has only been out a couple of months!), etc. Incidentally, am I the only Dann/Song fan out there?

Disclaimer: Quick, before anyone notices. Everything except the song belongs to Brian Jacques. The song 'Leaves' belongs to B*Witched.

All right, that over, I would like to introduce the first (well, the first I've seen, anyway) Luke/Sayna songfic!

Leaves

In winter I fall at your feet

In summer I blow where we meet

Two young ones, foraging for berries, any watcher would suppose. The wrong time of year, perhaps, but you could never tell with berries – or young ones, for that matter.

The mouse fell on his back, laughing. The leaves crunched again as his companion, a pretty maid, sprawled next to him.

"Don't ever do that again!" they said as one, and laughed harder.

The mousemaid tickled her friend, and they rolled over and over, giggling and chuckling like babes.

They could almost have been brother and sister.

And you, oh, you

You hold me up

The mouse swung his comrade aloft, holding her up as a mother holds up her babe to survey him. He looked at her thoughtfully, merriment disappearing from his face for a moment. Disturbed, the maid asked him what was wrong. Shaking his head he smiled dismissively and set her down. Making some teasing comment to take her mind off the subject, he dodged her playful slap and ran off, her chasing after him.

They were still laughing.

'Til like a leaf we fall

On to the ground

Of course, life went on, and Time was merciless to those two young ones. The maid died before her time, at the hand of corsairs, the leader of which was Vilu Daskar.

The mouse swore revenge. He chased Vilu Daskar over the sea, but always in the wake of the red ship, Vilu Daskar's ship. Finally he caught up with him, and in due course had his vengeance. Driving Daskar's pride and joy on to the rocks, he crushed his enemy against the wheel and killed him.

It's time for seasons to go

A reason, a reason to know

All the seasons passing in between those times! How many moments like the first were to pass before the two young ones listened to their hearts (instead of to their elders, as usual) and married!

Their son, Martin, surely one of the greatest warriors in history, was born, simply to complete their happiness. The gods surely loved them. But Death picked out Sayna for his next victim, and brought sorrow and bitterness to Luke.

Vilu Daskar, Death's favourite tool, was used. But perhaps Daskar became too cocky, needed to be reminded, that he, too, was a mere mortal, just like any other creature. And who better to use as this 'warning' than Luke the Warrior, who had sworn vengeance on Daskar.

And you, oh, you

You hold me up

'Til like a leaf we fall

On to the ground

Sayna was Luke's world, and when she died, everything collapsed. Luke's laughter died alongside her. He often compared his life to the leaves on a tree. First, when the buds are opening, his birth and childhood – especially his friendship with Sayna. When the leaves are full and green, so he loved and married Sayna, and his son, Martin, was born. As the leaves die, so did Sayna. The leaves falling off the trees was trying to get his revenge. As the leaves touch the ground, so he achieves his goal, for, as he said: 'I have no doubt that I will die when I kill Vilu Daskar. Besides, what would I have to live for after that?'

And you, oh, you

You hold me up

'Til like a leaf we fall

On to the ground

On to the ground

On to the ground

'Til like a leaf we fall

On to the ground
