He can feel it, the drumming sound in his heart whenever he hears her mention his name, or whenever he'd look straight into those chocolate eyes. He could feel his heart humming, throbbing, stopping – and it sends adrenaline all over his body to the point where he could almost, almost lose himself any moment but Natsu Dragneel chooses not to.
He ignores it.
Of course, he has to. Lucy is his nakama. And there are a lot of things he has to think about before giving in into the whispers his heart would give whenever he's close (so close and yet so far away) from the celestial mage.
"Natsu, you're such a big kid after all."
He smiles at her, that big sly grin that shows off his canine teeth and he puts a hand at a back of his head and pouts. "No wonder you look so old, Luce. You're no fun!"
"Aye sir!"
Lucy puts both of her hands on her hips and pouts back. "Am not!" She turns to Happy and points a finger at the blue exceed. "I thought you're on my side!"
That's why, Natsu thinks, that's why he has to ignore all these feelings. It's what he's supposed to do. He's not supposed to dwell and understand why he's feeling this way. He's supposed to be clueless and dense. He's supposed to protect Lucy and how could he protect her with him being so distracted. It was for the better and maybe, maybe, someday (when everything is over and he's able to meet Igneel and the terrors of Zeref is over and maybe—) he could tell her.
Maybe.
