Me and a Gun

Summary: "The barrel of my gun says I'm not 23 anymore. The smell of gun powder tells me I'm not at a man's mercy anymore."
A/N: I used a different spin on Tori Amos's song, "Me and a Gun". It's just a ficlet. Enjoy.
----------------------------------
This time I have the gun.
Gil and I are confronted by a serial burglar-rapist while at the most recent crime scene. I don't know why he came back here, or if the uniforms out front are sleeping on the job again. But I know I grabbed my gun before he got a chance to do the same. I stand just ten feet away, gripping my gun firmly in front of me without batting an eye.
Because this time it's different. The feeling of the trigger beneath my finger says this time, I'm in control.
I backed away cautiously, hiding my trembling hands behind my back. His apartment walls were made of paper and I hoped his neighbours had called the police by then.
"Damn it, Sara!" Across the room, Jacob yelled and waved his gun in the air. I stumbled over something and landed on the floor. He came bounding towards me, and picked me up off the ground by the front of my shirt. "You never learn, do you?"
My trembles turned to tears because I wasn't sure I'd be leaving the apartment in a body bag or on my feet. Whichever it was, I had to get out one way or another.

So I must get out of this."

The barrel of my gun says I'm not 23 anymore. The smell of gun powder tells me I'm not at a man's mercy anymore. The feeling of that trigger is all I need to know that I do not fear him. I am not a scared little college girl in a scuffle with her boyfriend. This time I have the gun.
The uniformed officers storm into the house, followed by Brass, before he can get any closer.
"Sara? ….Sara!" Gil calls to me but I stay steadily planted with my gun in front of me as they tackle this man.
Gil puts his hand on my shoulder in an attempt to wake me from my interlude, and I can feel his hand - but the feeling of that trigger is just too strong.
