Within his life, he had never succeeded in saving anyone he cared about. Kiritsugu, Rin, Sakura, Saber... Arturia, he failed to save any of them. He was completely powerless, made only to struggle so much, and fail so horribly. Such was his life. Failure after failure, loss after loss, confronted over and over again with his inability to save those he most wished to save. And cursed to go through that same torture after his death.
Kiritsugu, Rin, Sakura, Arturia, he couldn't save any of them... There was one other too. One more person he couldn't save. He was unable to do a single thing for her, except stay near her as her life faded away. And so, she became yet another he failed to save.
"You're still so merciless, Illya..."
"Illya?" she repeated the name he called her. It was a name hardly any called her by. A name she only allowed a few to use.
He managed to get back on his feet, albeit with some difficulty. He cast a quick glance to the young woman, before fixing his gaze on the large beast before him.
It was laughable. After so long, after going through so much, this young girl was the one person he still desired to save. Yet, he could never be the one to save her. That was a role reserved for his younger counterpart. The him that wanted to save everyone, instead of the him that wanted to save this one person.
It was too cruel.
He couldn't save anyone he wanted to when he was alive. And even now, he's still unable to save the one person he wishes to.
But, while he couldn't be the one to save her, he could be the one to ensure the other him would... by taking as many lives as he could from the beast before him. That thinking was why he managed to smile as he faced the strongest servant. Why he could smile as he faced his death.
He would give that foolish boy a chance. It was a fitting role for him... After all, he was never one who saves, he was always the one who gave others a chance to save. Such was his life.
Kiritsugu, Sakura, Rin, Arturia, and Illya... he was unable to save any of them. Not in his life, nor in the one he received after his death.
