Laughter Lines

Rose takes the Doctor to her favorite place on earth and says something he doesn't want to hear.

A/N: This is my first songfic, and it's nothing special. Laughter Lines, by Bastille

You took me to your favorite place on earth.

To see the tree they'd cut down ten years from your birth.

Our fingers circled inside its history

We brushed our hands right back in time through centuries.

Rose pulled the Doctor along, laughing at the childish comments he made about the bugs and the thorns in the woods. Her blonde hair was swishing around her face, the crisp autumn air making their cheeks rosy.

"Here it is." She said breathlessly when they came to a clearing. The Doctor ran a hand through his hair as he looked at the large stump in the middle.

"Wow, that must've been old, really old, it was huge,-" He kept babbling on to himself, circling the large wood rooted in the dirt.

Rose cut him off.

"I tried to count the rings when I was little. I never finished."

The Doctor shook his head.

"Nah, ring counting is a myth, it's way too inaccurate. The way to tell is the bark-" Rose took his hand, pulling him down with her to sit on the stump.

"Don't scientifically space analyze everything I say right now. Just- sit." She trailed off, looking dreamy. The Doctor watched her face, smiling.

"When did they cut it down?" He asked after a moment, cutting the silence. She sighed.

"When I was ten. I was heartbroken. I came here every single day, trying to see if it would grow back." She laughed quietly, then turned to him.

"Doctor." He beamed at her.

"Yes?"

"I-I need to tell you something."

He paled slightly and stopped smiling.

"What? Is something wrong?" He asked.

She took a deep breath.

"I need to go back to my mum. I need to be with her, I haven't spent any time with her. She's getting sicker and sicker. I need to go back."

He stared at her.

"Okay. I'll take you."

They stood and began walking back to the TARDIS.

Outside the square, blue police box they stopped a moment, the Doctor holding the door open slightly.

"Are you sure?" He murmured.

She nodded.

"Yes." Her voice was pained, and she didn't look at him. He nodded and they were off.

They had arrived to Mrs. Tyler's house. Rose stepped out of the TARDIS, eyes welling up with tears.

She turned and hugged the Doctor tightly.

I'll see you in the future when we're older

And full of stories to be told

"I'll see you when we're old and wrinkly and full of stories to tell each other." She whispered, knowing it wasn't true.

She would grow old, he would not.

He nodded and smiled, brushing a tear from her cheek.

"Yes. We'll talk about how butter prices have gone up and how we used to gallivant across the galaxies." She laughed and sobbed at the same time.

I'll you, with your laughter lines,

I'll see you in the future when we're old…

"I'll see with your laughter lines, punk." She wrapped her arms around his neck and he kissed the top of her head before she let go.

As she walked into the house, he said to no one in particular,

"Goodbye, Rose Tyler."

fin.

A/N: that was NOT how I wanted it, too obscure and-ugh. Doctor Who fan fiction is actually super hard to write for me, for some reason. Harry Potter is much easier. But they're both super freaking awesome. Anyways, send me your reviews, any constructive criticism would be fabulous. Thanks, lovelies! -oatmealclairepie
