To many Ludwig Beilschmidt appears to be a cold heartless man that cares only for his work and reprimanding others, namely Feliciano Vargas. However, those who take the time and energy to get close to Ludwig know; there are a few things that he truly loves.
Feliciano Vargas. The personification of North Italy Veneziano.
Gilbert Beilschimdt, Ludwig's older brother, Prussia, basically raised him; they have a deep love for each other, shown through bickering, teasing, and beer.
Honda Kiku. Their love is not romantic in any way, shape or form, but Ludwig cares deeply for his Asian friend.
His dogs. Gilbert jokes that Blackie, Aster and Berlitz are Ludwig's children, because he treats and cares for them as such.
His country. Probably the most obvious, although he regrets and despises parts of his history, Ludwig loves his country and will to nearly anything for it.
Ludwig doesn't love much, but he will do anything to protect them. Should you threaten any of these, you'd better run and pray for a miracle, because you'll have a very angry Ludwig after you. There are few other things Ludwig cares for, his only joys in life:
1. Cornflowers. He can't explain it, but the bright blue flowers instill him with a sense of peace and hope.
2. Baking. One of the only pastimes that Ludwig takes complete joy in. He does not bake often, for he is usually consumed with work and cleaning.
3. Football. Not the awful American sport, real football. The only other pastime he loves.
But even these would be given up if it meant the safety of his friends, family or country. His dogs count as family.
